Lawrence Wood Obituary

Lawrence Wood

1934 - 2015 PUTNEY Lawrence Joseph Wood (Larry or Woody to his friends), 80, of West Hill Road, died peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, July 12, 2015 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center of complications from lung cancer. He was born in Putney, VT, on November 17, 1934. He was the son of Lawrence H. and Nellie (Chmielewska) Wood. He attended elementary school in Putney and graduated from St. Michael's High School in Brattleboro, VT. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy and served for three years on the USS Leyte during the Korean Conflict. After his Naval service, he attended Coyne Electrical and Technical School in Boston, and graduated in 1956, and Coyne School of Electrical Engineering, graduating in 1957. He began his career as an electrician at Loyal Electric in Brattleboro. Woody married the love of his life, Louise Demers, in 1960 at St. Michael's Church. Their marriage was followed shortly by the births of their four daughters, who brought much joy to his life. In the early 70s, he joined IBEW Local 490 and was an active member of the Union while working as foreman on many large projects across New England. His career led him to Nuclear Power Services at Vermont Yankee, where he became Project Manager. He continued in that position until his retirement in 1998. In 1990, Woody renovated the house he was born in, and he lived out his life there. From that experience, he discovered he had a gift for carpentry, and he built a house for his daughter and granddaughter after his retirement. Woody was an avid reader. He was a sports fan and especially enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and the New England Patriots. More recently, he loved to watch his granddaughter's soccer and basketball games. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Louise (Demers) Wood of Putney, VT; his daughters, Kelly Wood of Weston, MA, Karen Feldman and her husband, Edward of Bridgewater, MA, Kathy Wood and her husband, Bruno Tenger of Zurich, Switzerland and Calabar, Nigeria, Kristine Wood of Putney, VT; and his two grandchildren, Jonathan Feldman and Danielle Wood. FUNERAL NOTICE: A funeral mass will be celebrated 3 p.m. Friday, July 17, 2015 at Our Lady of Mercy in Putney, VT. Burial will follow the service in the St. Charles Cemetery in Westminster, VT. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are in the care of Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michael's School or Rescue, Inc. in Brattleboro.

Dear Louise,

I was so saddened just yesterday to learn of Larry's passing. Have such fond memories of being young together all those many years ago. All of us kids used to play in that big barn of yours. I remember being devastated when Larry started to grow up and was no longer interested in going to the annual church rummage sale with me! If Larry got upset playing a game with us he would always say "All right for you kids. I'm going home." The last time I saw him was at my sister's funeral. Did you know her - Cynthia Long. Sounds like Larry had a full and wonderful life. Strange that we also have four daughters and our oldest is named Karen. I'm so very sorry for your loss.
Sincerely, Mickey Butler

Good bye Uncle. I was just getting to know you and thought you were a wonderful man. I think you had such a great sense of humor and I liked your taste in cars. You will be missed by all who knew and loved you.

I would like to express my sincere condolences for your loss. Please find comfort in God's promise that in the near future "the lame will leap like the deer" and "no resident will say: 'I am sick'".- Isaiah 35:6; 33:24
