9/11/2024 - I had the honor or wearing the photo of Matthew S. Rogan during the 1st annual Memorial Stair Climb at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. It was tough but I just had to look down at the photo and REMEMBER. I climbed 2,200 stairs, the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs with my weighted vest. I carried Matthew S. Rogan photo around my neck and his bravery in my heart! NEVER FORGET!

Matt-
It now has been 22 Yrs since your brother gave me your dog tags when he was visiting Burlington, VT when I living there in 2001 - I am now in Ashburn, Va.
I met him at Finnigans and while talking to him, he decided to give me your dog tags asking me to keep the memory of you alive, which I have done so after 22 yrs. Every time I think of you, I sense your presence-
Your family must miss you a great deal and I know the pain of their loss of losing you never goes away not even after so much time has passed.
We hope that your family is okay and comforted by memories of you-
Thank you once again for your unselfish service to help/save others.
RIP Matt-

Matthew-
After 20 years, I still have not forgotten what you have done for your fellow man on 9/11/01- it seems like yesterday that this day has came about. I also still have the dog tags that your brother gave me at the Finnigans Pub in Burlington, Vermont. I’ve been telling my 15 yr old daughter how I got the dog tags with your name and date of birth on it. She tells me that they learn about 9-11 in school and that pleases me that 9-11 won’t be forgotten.
Again you and your fellow firefighters are the true unsung heroes who have sacrificed your lives in an attempt to save others.
We will never forget as long as we walk on this great country we call United States of America!
RIP, Matt-

After 19 years, I still possess the dog tags that Matthew’s brother gave me at Finnegan Pub in Burlington, Vt and have them on my desk in his memory. Will never forget him as long as I live. I was only a few months older than he was. I hope his family reads this knowing that his memory continues to flourish nearly 20 yrs on. RIP brother, you did well in your endeavor to save many lives around you on that fateful day. Thank you for both of you and your fellow colleagues’ efforts.

Dear Mr. Rogan,
Yesterday you and I sat side by side on a US Airways flight to Phoenix,Arizona. At first you reminded me of a man that I've been thinking about special. You were like a big teddy bear. We got to talking about Fire fighting and Manhatten. I told you I lived in Manhatten 25 years ago-68th street between 2nd and 3rd upper East side-32nd story. Close to WTC. I asked you if you were there. Your eyes filled with tears-and sadness overcame you. Immediately I thought Wow--and you explained you had lost your baby brother to this incident 9-11-2001. We don't know why. I told you where I was this day-with the Sacred Heart of Jesus all around me--! Let's believe it is no coincidence you and I met. Hopefully my story gives you some hope of a Savior!
May your baby brother Rest in Peace and you continue to live in Peace with this assurance.
Love,

Matt-
Its now been over a year since I posted here of my intention to give back the dog tags that your brother gave to me up in Burlington, Vermont a few months after your life had been taken away on 9-11. I have attempted to return the dogtags back to your family but have not been able to find anyone connected with your family to do so. I called the firehouse and left a message/phone number but no one returned a call. I will do the right thing and dispose of the dogtags in the right way possible probably at a fireman's memorial in Washington, DC where I live close to.
Rest in Peace, Matt--you deserve it and thanks for your life of service in helping and comforting those who were helpless in the face of impending tragedy. Hard to believe we both were both born a few months apart.

A few months after Matthew Rogan died, I met one of his brothers (I am not sure if it was Chris or Gerry) at a pub in Burlington, Vermont where I lived for a year. After talking with Matt's brother about Matt for awhile, his brother gave me his dog tag and asked me to keep it in his memory. I said that I would do so until Bin Laden was caught or killed. Now that Bin Laden is definitely killed, I would like to meet up with either Chris or Gerry to give the dog tag back to the family where it rightfully belongs. I hope someone can either lead me to the family of Matthew Rogan so I can present the dog tag back. I can be reached at [email protected].
Thank you and God bless Matthew Rogan and those others that perished with him on 9-11-11 -- Never Forget!

Has someone turned the wind up / suddenly a chill in my bones
The old-man at sun up / he likes to be out there all alone
And here am I staring at the white-horse sea
Wond'rin' where it took you / and where it left me
There are white wings in a blue blue sky
Fish head on the boat-ramp / trousers knee high
Water freezing
Neptune's big blues hands splashing it around
Only teasing
Mermaids on the soft swell / don't kiss every wake
Sometimes the hook / sometimes the bait
There are white wings in a blue blue sky
Dot on the horizon / he sees the ocean as his friend
Never thinks of dying / he'll always be home again
Now here am I staring at the white-horse sea
Wond'rin' where it took you / and where it left me
There are white wings in a blue blue sky
So fly high / and find his soul

I am a FF with the New Orleans Fire Dept assigned to Truck 11. We received an E-mail about Matthew Rogan; who is also on Truck 11 in New York; from his brother Lieutenant Gerry Rogan. Gerry was trying to raise money for Matthew's family by selling T-shirts and a dog tag - Matthew FDNY on it.Many of us at the station made the purchase and I got to talk to and know somewhat of the Rogan family. Gerry and I exchanged calls a few times and to our surprise Gerry's wife Ellen has a sister who lives in LaCombe, LA. about half an hour from where I live in Mandeville,LA.. During one of Ellen's next visit to see Terry I had the pleasure of meeting these two wonderful families. Also my son works at Stennis Space Center which is where Terry's husband works. Who would have thought that two F.F.from two different states would have such a connection. The tragedy that befell the Rogan family gave me the opportunity to meet some wonderful people who's path I may never have crossed. I occasionally call Gerry and Ellen to say hi and ask how Matthew's family is doing. By the way Melissa,Matthew accompanies me on every call I make; I have his dog tag attached to the D-ring of my helmet. Always in my thoughts and prayers, Matthews fellow truckman:Chopper

Dear Bernadette and Family,
After the terrible news hit here in Italy where we are stationed as a military family, I wanted to print a list of all the victims of 9/11 for All Souls Day Mass that was to be held in our Chapel on base here in Sigonella, Sicily. I glanced through the names and knew there was only one Matt Rogan. I really didn't know too much about your brother but remember him when he was young and I would sometimes come over your house. I don't know if you remember me Bernadette but if you want to contact me, please do. I am so sorry for your loss but I am sure Matt is where he deserves to be...
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to read all these wonderful things by all the others that want to pay tribute to your brother.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the loss of Matthew in the 9/11 attacks. I was a classmate of his at St. John the Baptist. I went to my 20 year reunion in West Islip this past summer, and heard the tragic news there. When I saw Matthew's picture in the yearbook, I knew right away I had known him. After reading all these beautiful tributes, I wish I would have known Matthew better, way back when. My great grandfather too was in the NYFD, and earned a medal of honor for 20 years of service. I think of Matthew often, and offer my deepest sympathy to his family and friends. May God bless all of you, and keep you safe.

Not a day goes by that I do not think about my uncle, Matthew. Although I did not get to see him as often as I liked, we lived close enough that when a family gathering was planned, I looked forward to seeing him.
I remember when I was much younger, spending time at his house. I always loved seeing him. He was just a great person to be around. Before his first daughter was born, Sarah, I still remember becoming very excited, because I wanted a little sister. (My mother later gave birth to two girls) Sarah fulfilled that role for a while and because of the bond I shared with my uncle, I considered Sarah, and later his twin children, Matthew Jr. and Monica, my own siblings.
It pains me when I see Matthew's son, Matthew Jr. upset. He takes after his father in many ways. He's kind, caring, respectful, funny and just a great human being. No matter what he does, I am sure he will find success.
I have great respect for my aunt Missy for what she has done. She is continuing to raise her children to be the best that they can. Matthew Jr., as mentioned above, is just a great person, taking after my uncle in many ways. Sarah and Monica are developing into fine young women and will continue to do so.
Last year, as we sat on a beach in New Jersey, he told me that in a few years he planned to retire and perhaps even go back to school. He told me that he regretted not finishing out college. He wanted to make sure that I understood the importance of going to college. I value his advice.
Matthew is gone, but his legacy is alive in his children. That legacy will burn forever...
God Bless your Uncle Matt

As you grow up, your big brother's best friend is an important part of your life. You hate him when he goofs on you. You count on him to protect you. Your touched when he treats you with respect. Dear Matt's family,
My daughter, Carley, is the little girl in California who gave up her birthday presents so that she could give a donation to your family. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers each and every day. Your husband/daddy was a TRUE hero and one that my three children can remember. My daughter, Carley, wants to be a fireman because of Matt being the hero that he was. Matt was a true HERO on 9/11 and one that should never be forgotten. Gerry sent Carley a shirt with Matt's name on it and a necklace and she wears it to school at least once a week! She wears it proudly and hopes to meet Jerry if he comes to California in June to see Terry (Burbank Fire). We will always remember! Lots of Love - the Mullers

I never met Matthew Rogan but met his brother, Lt. Gerry Rogan (FDNY) in Vermont while skiing in early March. We met in the lodge, a place much better suited for two large Irish-American men than on the top of a large mountain with two boards attached to our feet. He was wearing a memorial T-shirt and dogtag-like medal around his neck.
We chatted for a while and he told me of his brother Matt and we spoke of all the "Brothers" lost on 9/11. I grew up in Pearl River NY where it seems every other person is FDNY or NYPD. The term "salt of the earth" comes to mind when you meet a fireman who is typically someone who loves their job, loves their family and will "give you the shirt off their back." Gerry Rogan did just that. I went back the ski hill with a new T-shirt and dogtag. I wear the T-shirt with pride after learning about Matthew and his wife and children. The dogtag hangs from my rear-view mirror. Since I spend a lot of time in the car, it serves as a daily reminder to be thankful for every day and thankful for all the people who server our great city of New York and our great country.
God Bless the Rogan family and all the families of the FDNY, NYPD, EMS and PAPD.
