Maynard Cabana Obituary

BRATTLEBORO -- Maynard E. Cabana, 87, of Garfield Drive, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 11, 1916, in South Portland, Maine, the son of Guy and Mabel (Jordan) Cabana. He attended schools in South Portland and had made his home in Brattleboro since 1936.

Mr. Cabana had formerly served with the Vermont National Guard and was employed at the Daily Shoe Shop in Brattleboro. He later worked at the A.C. Lawrence Leather Co. in Winchester, N.H., Holden & Martin Lumber in Brattleboro from 1944-1960, and at Grossman's Lumber in Brattleboro for 20 years. He retired in 1980. For many years he drove for the Red Cab in Brattleboro.

He was a man of simple tastes and needs, enjoying time spent with family and friends, whether helping with yard work or driving a friend around. He especially enjoyed vacations at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and growing roses.

His wife, the former Helen Brayman, died in 1975.

He is survived by a brother, Roger Cabana of Scarborough, Maine; four nieces, Patricia Wisell of West Chesterfield, N.H., Barbara Speiss of Winchester, N.H., Shirley Bell of Swanzey, N.H., and Donna Arsenault of Scarborough; and several grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces.

A son, Lawrence Cabana, died in 1962, and a brother, Ralph Cabana, died in 1997.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 13, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Max E. Carr Funeral Home, 147 Western Ave., Brattleboro.

Burial will be in the family lot in Locust Ridge Cemetery in Brattleboro. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home Friday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.

So sorry to hear about Maynard. He helped teach me how to drive, and I spent a lot of time with him, delivering stuff for Holden and Martin, when my Dad owned it. I remember him as a really good guy and fun to be around.
