James Dietzer Obituary

HEBRON

James Max Dietzer of Hebron passed away on March 14, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Aug 29, 1939 in Elwood, Indiana, son of James V. and Maxine (Lovelace) Dietzer. James moved with his family to Sacramento, CA where he attended school and resided until he enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17.

He served honorably as a submariner and Quartermaster until he was selected to train in special operations as an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) technician receiving special training as a Navy diver. He served with the EOD Group Pacific Mobile Unit based in Hawaii and completed multiple tours in Vietnam between 1965 and 1970. When asked by his grandchildren what he did in Vietnam, he often quipped that he was "a deep-diving, parachute-popping, jungle-fighting frogman." After a 13-year Naval career, James accepted a position with the State of Connecticut and after a 20-year career he retired as the Director of Purchasing at The University of CT Health Center in Farmington.

A devoted father and grandfather, Jim was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed riding and training his horse and snowmobiling at his cherished cabin in Danville, VT. He was an avid reader and lover of history, and he took great pride and pleasure in the activities of his grandchildren.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn. He is survived by his children Debbie Dietzer and her husband Greg Kulak of Glastonbury, Kurt Dietzer of Hebron and Jayme Sullivan and her husband Brian Sullivan of Hebron.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Jacob and Juliana Kulak and Keira Sullivan and a sister, Patricia Day of Hickory, KY. Friends may call on Monday, March 20, 2023 from 10:00am to 11:00am at the

Jim was a good friend of my dad´s at UConn Health Center. I had the pleasure of hunting with him many times in the mid 70s. He was always a gentleman. My father enjoyed his company very much.
You´ll always have him in your hearts. Your family are n my thoughts.
