Jeune Bae

Dr. Jeune G. Bae passed away on September 5, 2023 at UCONN John Dempsey Hospital of cardiac arrest, in the presence of his loving daughters. He was 83 years old and a resident of Farmington, CT.

Jeune was born in the coastal city of Tongyeong, South Korea, near Busan and always held a great affinity for the sea and its food throughout his life. He grew up during the Korean War, enduring turmoil and hardship. He experienced firsthand the miraculous nature of the human spirit and body, and its tenacity when challenged. This undoubtedly is how his desire for healing others developed, and when the journey into a highly accomplished career began.

He attended the nations top medical school, Seoul National University, College of Medicine, and was then recruited by the US Government to immigrate to the US in 1969 due to the national shortage of doctors. Upon his arrival, he interned at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, VA. He then completed his residency at Jefferson Medical College in PA, and UCONN Medical School in CT in Otolaryngology (ENT) and Facial Plastic Surgery. He went on to work at Bristol Hospital for close to 30 years, during which time he ran his own private practice as well as serving as an emergency room surgeon. Dr. Bae also served as Chief of Staff for the ENT department at Bristol Hospital for many years. At the same time, he held the privilege of being part-time faculty at UCONN medical school as a teacher and attending surgeon to residents.

Jeune was a true polymath. In his free time, when he wasnt busy being a doting father, he spent time honing his craft of Chinese calligraphy, for which he won awards for as a student in South Korea. He enjoyed painting, reading up on quantum physics, composing, and playing first violin with the Farmington Valley Symphony Orchestra, where he was a founding member and played with for close to 40 years. A highlight of his time with the FVSO was when they performed Brahms at Carnegie Hall in 2006. He passed down his lifelong passion for music and art to his daughters; his love for golf, however, which developed later in life, was not passed down.

Jeune is survived by his former wife, Linn Bae, their children, Liane Bae and Lummi Bae and her husband Kyle Getz, and his sisters in Korea, Jeong-Ja Bae, Hye-Sook Bae, Hae-Young Bae, and Hae-Won Bae. He is predeceased by his father Baek-Hyeon Bae, mother Sun-Geom Park, and younger brother Ey-Young Bae.

Dr. Bae was a beloved Son, Father, and Uncle. He was a respected friend and colleague to many. He was known for his generosity, humor, and selflessness. He never hesitated to help those in need, whether they were his patients, friends, or strangers. He touched the lives of many different people and will be missed dearly.
