Emily Varnum Obituary
Born in Brunswick County on May 7, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Cleveland L. and Sarah Louise Hewett Gore. She was a lifelong member of Jennies Branch Baptist Church. Emily received her Bachelor of Arts from Appalachian State University and taught school in Brunswick County; she kept several of her students as dear and close friends. She was the last of four siblings and was a rock the family depended on. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. James Varnum Sr.; son, James Varnum Jr.; three brothers, Shelton Gore, Gordon Gore and Steve Gore; and a special niece, Andrea "Angie" Gore Ludlum.
Surviving are her two daughters, Sarah V. Gore (Richard) of Tabor City and Sandra White (Charlie) of Cary; son, Steven Varnum (Ashley) of Ocean Isle Beach; grandchildren, Rachel Gore, Laura Gore, Christina Leffew (Ben), Kenneth Ballard, Bodhi Varnum and Ethan St. Jean; nieces and nephews, Brent, Jeffrey, Dorothy, Matthew, Becky, Beth, Emily "Mimi," Audria and Stephanie; an uncle, Mark Hewett; special cousins, Faye and Homer Lyles; special friends, JoAnn Simmons, Lois Ann Owens, Julia Hayes; and a host of family and friends who are too numerous to mention.
Funeral services were conducted from the graveside at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in Jennies Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
