John Jerew Obituary

John F. Jerew

Bucyrus - John F. Jerew, 88, died early Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at his home under the care of his granddaughter and Kindred Hospice.

He was born on March 15, 1933 in Marion to the late Howard and Helen (Greshel) Jerew. John graduated from Marion Harding in 1951. While at Harding, he met his sweetheart, Phyllis Hypes, and they were married November 25, 1951. He dearly loved her and missed her greatly since her death on October 12, 2018. John worked as a railroader and delivered bread and milk for Omar Bakeries before joining The Timken Co. and moving his family to Bucyrus in 1956.

Never one to sit idle, John often said "If you want to get ahead, work two jobs." John was a gifted entrepreneur, worked as a manager for the Moose Lodge and American Legion, and he and Phyllis also owned and operated the Sit 'n Shop on West Mary St. and later Kids World on South Sandusky. At home, he took meticulous care of his lawn and was very handy and able to do any kind of home improvement work. John enjoyed bowling and dancing with Phyllis and their friends over the years. He loved the game of golf most of all and played any where and any tome weather and his health permitted. He and Phyllis also liked to take trips with Hawaii being a favorite destination along with some memorable family cruises and vacations. He took special joy from his time with great granddaughter Keely and loved the company of his beloved rottweiler, Khia.

John was a member of the former First United Methodist Church, Bucyrus Masonic Lodge, Bucyrus Shrine Club, and Bucyrus Moose Lodge.

John is survived by daughter, Kerry Jerew; grandchildren, Nathan Springer (Kathy), Ashley Wells, and Preston Ley (Cassi Hessey); and great grandchildren, Keely Wells, Charlie Springer, and Jax Springer; and brother, Jerry Jerew. In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by siblings, Jack Jerew, Jim Jerew, and Peggy Graham and his beloved in-laws, Eugene and Addie Hypes.

John will be laid to rest next to Phyllis in Oakwood Cemetery in a private graveside service. Those wishing to honor him with a memorial gift are asked to make donations payable to Breast Cancer Research Foundation and give through Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820. Memories and photos can be shared on John's tribute page at www.wisefuneral.com.
