Charles Bernstein Obituary

BERNSTEIN - Charles, M.D. Dr. Charles Bernstein died in Port Jefferson, NY, on December 15 at the age of 90. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, and received his medical degree from George Washington University in 1938. Dr. Bernstein said that although the medical school had Jewish quotas in place, a Jewish philanthropist had made a large donation the year he applied and so two slots rather than one were open to Jewish applicants. Happily, I got one of them, Dr. Bernstein explained. Dr. Bernstein served as a medical officer in Europe during World War II, attaining the rank of captain. In 1944 he married Sylvia Hayman of Washington, DC. After the war, Dr. Bernstein practiced as a radiologist, first in Boston and then in Buffalo. He was in private practice in Buffalo from 1952 to 1985 and was a Fellow of the Radiological Society of North America. In retirement, Dr. Bernstein lived on Cape Cod and then in Sarasota, FL, from 1988 to 2007, when he moved to Glenhaven Nursing Home, Port Jefferson, NY. Dr. Bernstein is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sylvia Bernstein, daughter Ellen Godolphin of Concord, MA, sons Mark Bernstein, MD, of East Setauket, NY, Stuart Bernstein of Raleigh, NC, and Steven Bernstein of Los Angeles, CA, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Dr. Bernstein to the George Washington University School of Medicine, 2100 M Street, Washington, DC 20052.

The world is has dimmed for a moment with the loss of Charlie. He had a unique voice with which to share a mighty wit, and was someone you always enjoyed being around. To a life well lived and a real gentleman - we'll see you on the other side. Dear Sylvia, I and others are thinking of you at this very sad loss and time, and wish you the comfort of family, friends and so many years of good memories.
