Dennis Stephens Obituary

Stephens, Dennis Ivan Loren

Dec 16, 1944 - Jan 19, 2025

Passed away after reaching octogenarian status. Dennis was married to the love of his life, Donna Jean (Baker) Stephens, for 53 wonderful years until her passing in 2017. Together, they built a family filled with love and cherished memories. He remodeled a home built in the late 1800's all while supporting, guiding and loving his wife and children. He is survived by those children: Laura and Paul Ahlas, Penny and Brad Czerwinski, Brian and Brandy Stephens, and Julie Stephens. Dennis also leaves behind his brother, Peter Stephens; as well as many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews who will forever hold him in their hearts. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War receiving numerous medals and an honorable discharge. He mastered a career as engineer with Xerox after his time in service. Throughout his life, Dennis pursued a variety of passions that brought him joy and fulfillment. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing and boating. His skill in taxidermy reflected his deep appreciation for nature's beauty. Dennis also had a talent for woodworking thanks to the guidance of his father-in-law, Harvey Baker, and found peace in crafting with his hands. His adventurous spirit led him to explore our Great Lakes and the Pacific Ocean as an avid scuba diver. At home, he found companionship with his children and beloved cats and found solace in reading and puttering. As a retiree, he continued to support our veterans by serving on the board of the American Legion and regularly participating in Honor Guard duties. He also served as an elected official in the Town of Arkwright, NY. Dennis's legacy is one of love for family and a zest for life's many adventures. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and whom he helped, of which there were many. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.

My sister, Christine Joy, was friends with Donna and Dennis Stephens. She visited them when they moved & would come home & tell me all about her visits. They live quite a distance from North Tonawanda according to her. I remember her telling about cats! I met them once at one of my sister´s chowder parties.

I left Sunday´s obituaries on the dining room table and I just noticed Dennis´ picture & name. I wish I could share the obituary with my sister but she died in July 2021. (Christine´s husband, Joe May died in October 2023.)

So sorry for your family´s loss. The tribute to your father was beautifully written. May peace be with all of you.

Sincerely, Catherine Kurczynski

Dennis and Donna were trusted friends and neighbors for decades both in the city and moving out to the country watching our families grow old together. He rescued me from many jams, from stuck in the mud to emergency room visits. He was always there when I needed him. "Thank you neighbor, you saved me again." was a regularly used phrase. What I'll remember most is the many times Mira and I would get together with Donna and Dennis and laugh about the stupidest things until our stomachs hurt. You loved watching the birds and fireflies, now they're a living memory of your spirit, reminding me of the good times Thank you neighbor, rest in peace.

Denny!
You always made me smile with your amazing sense of humor! "Optical conclusion" was one of my favorites! God speed my friend.

Cousin Dennis was not only a cousin, he was like my older brothers, but more importantly, he was a friend. We visited one another as kids and enjoyed seeing each other. Family reunions were great times together and seeing Punkin, Dennis,Pete, Ginger & Judy was a highlight of my younger days. I miss his parents very much as well. Farewell my friend, your time on Earth is through but you will live on in our hearts & minds. God bless your soul.
