Dorothy LAGEMAN Obituary

Lageman - Dorothy K.
Age 87, formerly of Buffalo, NY, passed away peacefully in her Johns Island, SC home, on July 19, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel. Dorothy was born in Buffalo, NY on June 15, 1934 to the late Mary and Curt Kahle. She was the first in her family to graduate from college, receiving both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Education from the University of Buffalo. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, Dorothy was a founding member and manager of a family business, the infamous Willow Beach. The Beach was a swimming quarry in Lancaster, NY and home to thousands of people during the hot summer months. Dorothy taught elementary school in the Cleveland Hill School District for 30 years, sharing her passion for learning with a multitude of children. When she ran into some of her old students later in life, many would not only recognize her, but would thank her for being such a wonderful teacher and mentor, offering guidance and discipline. Dorothy also shared her love for golf with her husband, the late John W. Lageman, whom she was married to for 57 years. She was a 35-year member of the Women's Buffalo Golf Club, holding many leadership positions during her involvement. Dorothy's biggest challenge came in 2002, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After aggressive treatment and surgery, she donned her baseball cap, carried on with her duties, and played golf without skipping a beat. The Buffalo community is richer because of her involvement in the Dragon Boat Races, the 'Look Good Feel Good' cancer programs, and the Vanity Fairs which benefit the Breast Cancer Network. Dorothy was also an avid lover of animals, her vegetable and flower gardens, and of course, Buffalo and the Buffalo Bills. She loved her family and was a doting grandmother. She enjoyed being surrounded by her many friends. She often said that wealth was not determined by how much money she had in the bank, but by the number of good friends she had.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Laura and Lisa, her son in-law, Jeffrey, and her two grandchildren, Marissa and Lauren. Memorials can be made to the Hospice of Charleston, 4975 Lacrosse Rd #200A, North Charleston, SC 29406, or OCONEE Humane Society, 1925 Sandifer Boulevard, Seneca, SC 29678.

I was just thinking about your mom today and how kind she was as a gym teacher at Cleveland Hill. I never was the most athletic type but she always made me feel special. Sending love to Lisa and Laura

I am saddened to hear of my dear friend passing. I recently sent Dorothy several emails which had photos of some of her retired friends at Cleveland Hill. I will always remember my good friend, my 5th grade colleague and partner in after school activities....We always celebrated Dorothy's birthday on Flag Day, June 14th. You will be sorely missed and I will no longer be able to tell you" Hot Off the Press". Fly High Lady Eagle and XGLC.

Sincere condolences to Dorothy's daughters and family. She was a smart, sassy, funny, good-hearted and full of life woman. I was privileged to meet Dorothy thru our both volunteering for the C of C Women's golf tournaments. Dorothy made this world a better place.......
