John Maloney Memoriam

Maloney, Hon. John V.

St. Patrick's Day, and I reflect on my Grandfather, Hon. John V. Maloney, a prominent Buffalonian. Son of John J. and Mary A. Maloney, he was born in Buffalo on July 30, 1880 and died on June 10, 1946. Married to my Grandmother, Blanche H. (Clayson) on June 7, 1905, they adopted my Mother, Martha Maloney Lane, at infancy. Mom loved her parents, and she had a very close bond with her father. He was a graduate of Canisius College and the Law School of the University of Buffalo, where he received his law degree in 1901. Along with brother Fred C., he formed Maloney & Maloney, a law practice which later gave a career start to my paternal grandparents, John F. and Mary A. Lane, both attorneys. Distinguished attorney and president of the Erie County Bar Association, my Grandfather was also a renowned civic leader associated with Catholic Charities, Children's Aid Society, Boy Scouts of America and The Salvation Army. In the fall of 1933, he was elected to the New York State Supreme Court (Eighth Judicial District) and took his seat on January 1, 1934. He served on the bench until March 1946 when ill health forced him to resign. (My Dad, Hon. John P. Lane, would assume that bench decades later.) Thank you for your probity, generosity and humanity.

With esteem and love from your grandson,

Timothy V. Lane
