John MEACHAM Obituary

MEACHAM - John Allen
Born in Buffalo, New York, on October 4th, 1944, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on October 14th, 2022, in Eugene, Oregon. Known to family and friends as "Jack," he grew up in Mill Valley, California, where he graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1962. He attended Stanford University, graduating with a BA in Psychology in 1966. With his wife, Mary, Jack served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Turkey from 1967 to 1969. He received his PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Michigan in 1972 and joined the faculty of the State University of New York at Buffalo. His children, Meredith and Peter, were born in Buffalo and attended the Park School and Amherst Central Schools. While at UB, Jack's work was notable for initiating the study of prospective memory, shaping attitudes on the nature of wisdom, and for his commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. He retired in 2006 at the rank of SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor. Following his retirement, Jack and Mary moved to Eugene, Oregon, where he was an unstoppable force with the Eugene Bootcamp, and an enthusiastic drummer, dancer, photographer, and writer. He enjoyed hiking and camping throughout Oregon and California, as well as international travel. Jack is survived by his wife, Mary C. Meacham, née Curtis, of Eugene, Oregon; his daughter, Meredith C. Meacham, of San Francisco, California; and his son, Peter A. Meacham, of Boston, Massachusetts.

Just tried to find professor jack tonight because I started watching the foundation by Eric Asimov in Apple TV. I took a class with him in graduate school in early 80s and he talked about the novel so much I read it and all it's many companion pieces. Wanted to thank him. Thanks Jack!

I took an undergraduate course with Dr. Meacham in the Spring of 1987 at the University of Buffalo. He was not only a great teacher, he was the nicest one I ever had. He have every indication of truely enjoying himself when with students. He was a teacher that every student remembers, and one who made his mark and left his mark. My sincere condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Jack Meacham, you were one of the nicest, kindest, most grounded and considerate people I worked with in 30 years at UB. I'm happy to know your retirement years were as lovely as were. My deepest sympathy to those you loved and who loved you.
