OPERA - John L.
Of Lewiston, NY, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at his home under the care of his family and Niagara Hospice. He was born in North Tonawanda, NY, on November 1, 1940, a son of John and Mary (Pacurari) Opera. Mr. Opera graduated from Tonawanda High School in 1957 and attended the University at Buffalo on a music scholarship and later majored in geology and earned Bachelor and Master of Science degrees. He worked as a geologist for the federal government and the State of New York, before entering education in 1967. Mr. Opera was a member of the founding faculty of City Honors School and Leonardo DaVinci High School. He enjoyed spending time bicycling, kayaking, fly fishing and was an accomplished classical and jazz musician. He was also an avid gardener, his other interests included the geologic history of Western New York, Zen poetry, photography, woodworking, and the writings of Henry David Thoreau. Mr. Opera is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Kathleen R. (Smith) Opera; his children, John Opera and Jane (Karl) Winkler; a granddaughter Nina; a brother Michael (Sharon) Opera; also his beloved extended family. His family will be present on Saturday from 9 AM-10 AM, at St. Peter's Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM.
