Liz FRIEDMAN Obituary
Passed away in Aptos, California, on Sunday, April 10, 2022, following a six year courageous battle with cancer. Liz was born in Buffalo, New York, the only child of George and Alice Wilton Lyons. Liz was an only child but she did have three beloved "sisters", Margaret Lyons Brooks, Emily Buchbinder and Susan Hayden. Liz graduated from Nardin Academy and then earned a B.A. at Daemen College and an M.F.A. at the University of Buffalo. Soon after graduation, she started teaching at Canisius High School becoming the first female instructor in the school's history. She established a fine arts department which flourished under her care. In 1977, Liz relocated to Turlock,California and taught at the Junior College level. From 1980-1986 Liz taught fine arts at Logan High School in Union City, California. In 1986, Liz once again relocated, to Aptos, where she launched her unique art career. Liz offered the public a wide range of colorful, vibrant, and frequently humorous images via a number of mediums. She became a well known and acclaimed artist in Santa Cruz County. Liz is survived by a large extended family, her ex-husband, Mark S. Friedman, her "perfect dog" Jake, and companion, John Gavirillis. A Family Celebration of Life is planned for this summer. Uugghh, Ms Friedman... So grateful to have shared with you what an impact you made on me during my high school path. Then... I was able to swap cancer war stories with you as a grown adult... you were truly special, and will be truly missed.

I am truly shocked to learn of Liz's passing; she was my sister's classmate at Nardin and a member of a small social group we all were associated with. Her father was a friend to my parents as well. AMDG
