Dr. Hakala was both kind and stern as a mentor. She mentored many Masters and PhD students, including myself. She was a meticulous writer. I fondly remember that she did not like the use of "noun adjectives"; and she often deleted these grammatically awkward phrases from my first drafts of manuscripts. I learned scientific writing mainly from Dr. Hakala. She cared deeply about publishing good, correct scientific results. She would never rush to publish, she would replicate experiments sufficiently to convince herself and others that the results were valid. She was creative, and invented several concepts and experimental tools that are widely in use today by scientists around the world. She was a model scientist.

Dr. Hakala always sought the truth in her experiments, showing the utmost integrity. She would truck no nonsense, political or otherwise. She was scientifically creative, and a real contributor to the war against cancer. Following her example would benefit cancer research scientists worldwide.
