Flavin, Marillyn Mae

December 16, 1926 - September 27, 2023

Born Marillyn Mae Fassett, in Akron, OH, peacefully passed away at the age of 96 in Elk Grove Village, IL. She was a remarkable woman whose life was marked by a deep commitment to education, a love of family, and a boundless passion for creativity and adventure. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Daniel J. Flavin III, her loving parents, Lloyd Allen Fassett and Laura (Skonecki), her step-father, Stephen Gajda, and her dear siblings, Helen Fagan and Dr. Lloyd Allen Fassett. She leaves a legacy of love and inspiration that her family will forever cherish. Marillyn is survived by her devoted sons, Daniel Lloyd Flavin and David Allen Flavin, and their respective spouses, Patricia Flavin, and Deborah Flavin. She was a doting grandmother to Daniel Stephen Flavin, Elizabeth Marie Flavin, and Emily Anne Flavin, who were a source of immeasurable pride and joy throughout her life. Marillyn dedicated her life to the pursuit of knowledge and the nurturing of young minds. She began her educational journey by earning a Bachelor of Science in Education from New York State College for Teachers in Buffalo, NY, in 1949. Her passion for teaching led her to become an elementary school teacher, where she inspired countless students with her enthusiasm and dedication. Marillyn's commitment to lifelong learning was evident as she earned a Master of Science in Elementary Education in 1959 and later achieved her Doctor of Education from the same institution in 1973. She went on to become a distinguished faculty member at Buffalo State University and Canisius University in Buffalo, NY, leaving an indelible mark on the field of education. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Marillyn was a force of creativity and energy. She championed the unique spelling of her first name, proudly using two "L's." She found joy in her daily walks, staying active and vibrant throughout her life. Her creative talents shone through her intricate needlepoint projects, many of which became cherished personalized Christmas stockings, a testament to her enduring spirit. Marillyn deeply loved her family, including her nieces, Lisa Fagan and Marillyn Damelio. She cherished the moments spent with Marillyn Damelio, her husband, Tony, and their twin children, Anthony and Julia, during extended trips and vacations, infusing these moments with boundless joy. Her curiosity and energy extended to her love for anything to do with history, her fervent enthusiasm for the theater, and her endless enjoyment of mystery novels. Marillyn's generous spirit was evident in her role as a Docent at the Roosevelt House, her volunteering efforts for Meals On Wheels, and at the Shea Theatre in Buffalo, NY, where she shared her love for the arts with others. A private memorial service will be held in Buffalo, NY, the city that Marillyn was so proud to be a part of and call home. She will be remembered for her enduring love, passion for education, and unwavering dedication to family and community. Marillyn Mae Flavin's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing and loving her. I believe she was my 3rd grade teacher at Parkside Elementary School in the Town of Tonawanda. I never knew her 1st name, but I remember my teacher's name was Mrs. Flavin and she was able to deter me from sucking my thumb. My condolences...
