Marshall DUGUAY Obituary

DUGUAY - Marshall Joseph, Ph.D.
Passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022, after a lengthy decline in health, at home with his family by his side. He was very brave, never once complained and showed us all how to die with courage and dignity. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Linda Kremer-Duguay. Loving father of his twin sons, Christopher and David (Kimberly), Duke, Lynne, Brian (Emily); and Grandpa of six grandchildren. He will be missed by the mother of his children, and friend, Bettyann Duguay. Predeceased by his brothers, Douglas and John. Marshall was a Professor Emeritus at the State University of New York College in Buffalo. Early in his career he worked at Roswell Park Cancer Institute where his expertise in speech rehabilitation with patients who had lost their larynx led him to become the world's leading expert in esophageal speech. He lectured worldwide in Europe, the United States and Canada. At that time he taught more people to speak again than anyone in the world. Marshall was the founder of the New Voice Club of the Niagara Frontier which launched this concept nationwide and was a fellow in the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. He received too many awards to mention, but two he was most proud of receiving were the Service to Mankind Award (Sertoma Club) and the Master Clinician Award from the International Association of Laryngectomees. Marshall produced and appeared in five rehabilitation films, and had 42 publications, and 13 text book chapters. He was a professional jazz singer and bass player throughout WNY and an actor in many theater companies in Buffalo for many years. In his retirement he continued to be extraordinary and creative by painting on glass windows among other artistic endeavors. Arrangements are entrusted with ESSENTIALS CREMATION AND BURIAL SERVICES. In accordance with Marshall's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. In his memory, donations to Roswell Park Cancer Institute would be appreciated. Online condolences may be shared on Marshall's Tribute Page found at EssentialsNiagara.com.

Marshall was one of my professors while I was an undergraduate in Communication Disorders at Buffalo State from 1968-1972. He had a profound effect on my learning, training and career. He was my mentor and my friend. I talked about him and the positive influence he made, to many colleagues over the years. Finally I realized I had never told him! So I decided to write him a thank you note, and to let him know what an amazing professor he had been. I found out my letter arrived just at the time he was retiring, and I am told he read my letter at a retirement dinner. What timing! While we lost touch, I have enjoyed a 40 year rewarding career as a Speech-Language Pathologist. I owe much of my inspiration from Marshall. My heart goes out to his family. Sending love and sympathy, Nancy Rassiga, MS,CCC Buffalo State Class of 1972.
