Martha How Obituary

How, Martha J.

Sept. 16, 1933 - Feb. 29, 2024

died peacefully in her Buffalo home on February 29, 2024. Martha Jane Johnson was born in Jamestown, NY on September 16, 1933 to Conrad Johnson and Jane Hedlund. Martha spent her early years on Chautauqua Lake where she eventually met her husband James How who summered there. After marrying James in 1952 she moved to Buffalo where "Jim" grew up. Martha's first welcome to the City of Good Neighbors was the Junior League of Buffalo. She was a member of the League for decades and volunteered for every Decorator's Showhouse. Martha always said that many of her life long friends were League members. Martha was a member of The Buffalo Canoe Club, The Saturn Club, The Albright Knox Art Gallery and The Burchfield Penny Art Center. She was a believer in supporting local schools, charities and art galleries. Martha enjoyed tennis, paddle tennis, skiing, sailing and hiking the Appalachian Trail. She and Jim were passionate about traveling the world especially on their bikes. Martha is survived by her three daughters; Jennifer How, Elizabeth Bartolone (Paul), Gretchen Said (Noviar) and four grandchildren; Hendry, Peter, Emma and Samuel. Her family will host a Celebration of Life later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Junior League of Buffalo Legacy Fund.
