Marty,
A man who never gave up, who never forgot where and how he grew up, who never changed his personality or behavior no matter how successful he was and someone you felt fortunate to call your friend. He had the perfect mate in Ellen who led with a smile and welcoming demeanor. It's been years since I last saw them, at Sports Focus when Marty was doing PT, but the memory of both wonderful people is still strong. God bless.

Ellen, Jason, John and families- Though my sadness is profound, every time I thought of Marty this week, a smile would undoubtedly make its way across my face. That is what Marty did....he made you smile. He made you feel comfortable. For me, that was important. We met when I was a freshman in a special advanced class at the high school in September of 1967. Marty had his pick of friends, but for some reason he chose to befriend this nervous and shy freshman. From the outset, he made a difference in my life. I did not realize at the time, but Marty was mentoring me. Through his experience, wisdom, skill and wit, he guided me through that often difficult freshman year. As popular as he was, he included me in his circle of friends.
Looking back, I could see how teaching was his destiny. He had a natural ability to read people and their limitations. He would work within their limitations and build up their self image and develop self confidence. That is what he did for me and years later that his what he did for the children he taught at the WNYCPC. Many of the adolescents that Marty taught were also residents in a community residential program I supervised. They spoke with admiration about how meaningful Marty was in their life. He was more than a teacher. He was a mentor and the male role model most of them lacked. He filled a void at a critical period in their lives. He encouraged them to be the best they could be. Always with a smile and always with laughter. Many of them spoke of the difference Marty made in their lives.
He was a great athlete, an outstanding mentor and leader and a realist. He knew that football was limited and planned accordingly. Football´s loss was education's gain. He made a difference for so many. The life lessons taught to so many are his legacy. No greater gift can one give than to leave a legacy of life and love. That was Marty Januszkiewicz. The quintessential number 33, will always number one in our hearts. He will be missed. Yet, Marty will never be forgotten.
I apologize for the length of this remembrance. I was hoping to join the family and friends to pay my respects. Unfortunately, my own health does not allow me to be in crowds, risking further lung infections that I have been prone to since my bypass surgery.
Ellie, I do know that you were the one true love. Yours was a storybook love affair. Please know that you, Jason, John and your families are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. I will think of Marty often. It will always be with fondness, admiration, gratitude and love. And always with a smile. God Bless.

Sorry to hear this as I remember watching him play for Syracuse at West Point. He was a good and tough running back. I had to come and say "I remembered you still for all these years as a player.
RIP
