Michael Smith Obituary

Michael was the third of seven children of Russell S. Smith, Jr. and Mary Ann (née Burg). He graduated from Kenmore West High School in 1965 and joined the Air National Guard in 1967. His unit was soon activated, and he served in Vietnam maintaining fighter jets. Upon returning home, he attended the University at Buffalo and earned his degree in 1972.

Michael built a successful career with Fisher-Price Toys, where he rose to lead sales and customer service. He later held executive roles with companies in NC, MO, and AZ before returning to WNY to own and operate Watson's Chocolates on Elmwood. Michael retired to South Carolina in 2019.

He was the husband of the love of his life, Kathleen (née Hager), with whom he celebrated 40 years of marriage this past August. He was the loving and proud father of Chris (Val) and Jeff (Lisa), stepfather of Brian (Dane), and grandfather to Bennett, Sawyer, and Delainey.

Michael is also survived by sisters Tobin "Toby" Kane, Judy Nostrant, Elizabeth "Betsy" Van Valkenburg, and brother Patrick (Julie). He was preceded in death by his brother Chris and sister Kathy Kelley (Robert), as well as brothers-in-law Denny and Kit. He is fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. His former wife, Barbara Cassetta (née Joseph), with whom he shared his two children, also survives him.

Michael will be remembered for his larger-than-life presence, sharp sense of humor, and meticulous attention to detail. In recent years, he especially enjoyed taking their dog Winnie to the dog park.

Services will be private.

I´m so sad to hear this news about Michael. "Larger than life presence" describes him very well, I agree! A good-hearted guy, reminded me of Denny in a way-quiet until a well-timed zinger popped out, loved laughter, loved family. My heartfelt condolences to his beloved Kathy and the entire family.
