Susan Dyte Carrick
Susan Dyte was my sister for over 70 years until her death on September 22, 2024.
But, I lost her almost six years before then.
Alzheimer´s disease took her from us long before she physically died. It´s a cruel fact that the person who has this terrible disease is not the only victim.
Sue lost her memories, her loves, her hobbies, and all things she loved most on this earth, but she continued in a world of her own while her family and friends lost her forever.
My fun-loving sibling was gone; she was creative, loved a mystery, sewing, writing, history baking, and cooking. Sue was a teacher, a budding genealogist, a lover of Canada, coffee, Kraft caramels, and secrets.
Sue was a loving, kind, and selfless, giving person. She was a lifelong sister and friend. But above all else, she was a loving mom.
She loved her children above all else. She did all she could for them. I recall a time when she quit her job and took on a new one in a school so that she could be there to help her child who had been transferred there for help with learning disabilities. When it came to her children nothing was too difficult or too much to ask. She loved them with all of her heart.
She was the mom who drove the teenagers to Toronto for a concert, waited outside in the car then drove them back home again.
She was always on 24 hour alert for anything anyone needed. You knew you could count on her.
Sue and I returned to college as adult learners at about the same time. We attended some graduate classes together. It was an experience and accomplishment I´ll never forget. She was so much fun!
She was much loved and is much missed. But she remains in our hearts and minds forever.
Love you, Susie.
