Marye Hootman Obituary

Marye Anne Hootman, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 10, 2025, in Summerville, South Carolina.

Marye Anne was born on February 5, 1933, in Wapello, Iowa, the daughter of Hallie R. and Mable I. (Knight) Longshore. She spent her early years in Wapello before moving with her family to Cedar Rapids as a teenager. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids in 1951.

On August 27, 1950, Marye Anne married the love of her life, Billy Dean Hootman, in Wapello. Together they built a loving home and raised their family with devotion, care, and laughter. Marye Anne was a nurturing and creative mother who made clothing for her children, taught them to sew, cook, and take responsibility, and filled their home with warmth and encouragement. Over the years, she extended that same love to the many pets that were part of her family. She also played an important role in the lives of others; helping raise her brothers and sisters.

Marye Anne spent much of her career in the food service industry. In the 1960s, she worked as a food service manager at Meth-Wick Manor in Cedar Rapids. She later owned and operated both the Norway Café and the Blairstown Café, managing them with great dedication until they were sold. In 1980, Marye Anne and her family moved to Independence, where they opened The Station House Restaurant, a beloved local gathering place.

A woman of many talents, Marye Anne was especially gifted in interior decorating. She had a natural eye for color, design, and detail, and her creative touch could transform any space into something warm and inviting. Her love for beautiful things and unique finds led her to open and operate The Painted Lady Gift Shop and Emporium in Independence, where her creativity and eye for design shined through every display.

After many years in Independence, Marye Anne moved to Davenport, Iowa, in 2009, and later to Summerville, South Carolina, in 2019 with daughter Deanna and son-in-law Craig.

Marye Anne is survived by her daughters, Erin Trimble of Independence, IA, and Deanna Williams and Dana Johnson, both of Summerville, SC; grandchildren; Jacob Hess, Rachel Stoner, Reid Williams, Tracy Johnson, Gabriel Conner, Erik Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Dylan Trimble, and Adaralyn Trimble, 16 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, her siblings, Linda Barrett of Hiawatha, IA, Rex Longshore of Faribault, MN, Steven Rothenbucher of Sandy, OR, Barry Rothenbucher of McMinnville, OR, and Alan Rothenbucher of Canon City, CO.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Billy; her son, Billy Jr.; her brother, Jack Longshore and sister, Rose Nielson; and her sons-in-law, Craig Williams and Richard Johnson.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg, IA.
