Michele Greiner Obituary

FAIRFIELD – Michele M. Greiner, 54, of Fairfield, Iowa, died Friday, Nov. 20, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 3100 W. Madison Ave, Fairfield, with Rev. Stephen Page presiding and Rev. Nicholas Adam concelebrating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Fairfield, with a wake service beginning at 7:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Nicholas Adam.
Dr. Michele Marie (Barlow) Greiner, Ph.D. was born Sept. 23, 1961, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Jack and Joan (Sheehy) Barlow. She graduated from Newman Catholic High School in 1980, and earned a bachelor's degree from Loras College. Michele continued her passion for psychology through graduate study at the University of Iowa, earning a Ph.D. in 1990. She practiced counseling psychology in Fairfield and the surrounding areas for many years. Throughout her career, Michele served as a member of the Iowa Psychological Association, serving as their president in 2007. Since her presidency, Michele worked tirelessly to increase the number of post-doctoral psychologists practicing in Iowa. Through her efforts, the program is bringing young psychologists to practice in the state.
She was united in marriage to Michael J. Greiner on June 16, 1984 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City, Iowa. She was the mother to two children, Alexander and Kara. While maintaining an active professional career, one could never doubt that Michele devoted her life to raising her children. Michele was involved in many community activities through membership in PEO Chapter OO, Friends of FBLA, and the Fairfield Community School District book reconsideration committee. She was a board member of the Fairfield Public Library, Fairfield Band-Aides, St. Mary Preschool, and was a founding member of the Fairfield Education Foundation.
Those left to celebrate her life include her husband, Michael; her children: Alex and Kara; her brother, Patrick Barlow and his wife Lila (Haymaker) of LaCrosse, Wis.; her sister Ann Oberg (Barlow) and her husband Kevin of Sioux Falls, S.D.; in-laws Joseph and Carolyn Greiner; sisters-in-law: Beth Greiner-Ward, Amy Felan-Jimmerson, Tanya Greiner, Ruth Greiner; and brothers-in-law Geoff Ward, Kevin Jimmerson, John Greiner, and Tim Greiner; and many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and dog, Lily.
Michele was preceded in death by her mother Joan; and her father, Jack; as well as many aunts and uncles.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fairfield Band-Aides, the African Violet Foundation, the PEO Iowa Project Fund, or a charity of the donor's choice that reflects their memories of Michele.
