ALLAN JORDAN Obituary

ALLAN LAWRENCE JORDAN - CHARLOTTE - Allan Lawrence Jordan, 78, died at his home in Charlotte on Thursday, May 30, 2013. He was born on April 7, 1935, in Kenmore, N.Y., the son of Allan L. and Amelia (Waver) Jordan. Upon graduation from high school, he served in the United States Coast Guard, a service to which he remained fiercely loyal throughout his life. Allan graduated from St. Michael's College in 1960, and then attended Villanova University School of Law. Allan spent much of his active life designing and building homes on Cape Cod, in Florida, in Utah, and in Vermont, and although his work often involved catering to the desires of the "rich and famous," his true passion was affordable housing. In Charlotte, he was instrumental in effecting zoning changes to enable persons of moderate income the opportunity to be homeowners. He was most proud of his development of Albert's Way, a Habitat for Humanity project, which will allow five families to own their own homes in Charlotte. An ocean sailer, a skier, a golfer, a world traveler, Allan was above all a modest man, an honest man, a gentle man, a good man. He was predeceased by his brothers, Byron Jordan (Capt. U.S. Coast Guard), and Thomas Jordan (TTC ,who died in service to the Coast Guard in 1977); and sisters, Mary Ann Oyama, and Theresa Windover. He leaves to mourn his wife, Trudi (Gecewicz) of Charlotte; daughter, Amy Jordan and husband, Roger Block, of Newburyport, Mass., currently sailing in Indonesia; son, James and wife, Hilda, and their daughter, Gabriela, of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter, Catherine and husband, William Arakelian, and their daughter, Zoe, of Portsmouth, N.H.; and a special Vermont niece, Rebecca Manchester and husband, Zachary, of Charlotte. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Beierl of Denver, Colo.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the United States, from Hawaii to Maine. Our appreciation is extended to the scientists, poets, philosophers and healers of the Oncology Departments of Fletcher Allen Health Care who gave so generously of their time and talents in their attempts to make Allan whole. We express special thanks to Mary Loney, and the staff of the VNA Palliative Care and Hospice programs for their efficient and sincere kindness. For the friendship, selflessness and compassion of Carolyn Greene and Bonnie Schumacher, who give new meaning to these terms, our gratitude is profound. Visiting hours will be held at Ready Funeral and Cremation Services South Chapel on Thursday, June 6, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Charlotte on Friday, June 7, 2013, at 11 a.m. Online condolences may be sent to www.readyfuneral.com. Contributions will be gratefully accepted by either of Allan's two favorite charities: Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity, 300 Cornerstone Drive, Williston, VT 05495; or Food for the Poor, 6401 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek, FL 33073.

Well, I miss Uncle Al. He had a great sense of humor, and we always had memorable times together. His life experiences brought deep insights into our conversations. I remember one Thanksgiving in AZ with Uncle Hank (Boy, that was a hoot); Many trips down to the Cape to see the Jordan kin; Visits to North Andover, Bringing the Windborne up from Vero Beach; the family reunion in Buffalo, trips up to VT to see him and Aunt Trudi...all very fond memories. God bless Uncle Al. Love Kevin.
