Dan,Jenny, Debbie, Matthew and David,
Sorry to hear of your dad's passing. My mom (Elizabeth Sheehey) asked me to give you all her deepest sympathy. Ben was a great neighbor for 50 years. When he moved away from North Street he brought over one of his watercolors for our family to keep --he was such a talented artist and engaging storyteller, and always took the time to connect with people. We will always remember him and your mom.

To Dan and all the Stein family we are sorry for your loss. Ben left a memory with everyone he met. He was that kind of man, nothing indecisive. His watercolors were striking and his instruction in dancing definite. He will be missed.

To Dan Stein and all of Ben Stein's extended family,
Alison and I were sad to hear about Ben's dying. Ben enriched our lives for many years. He was one of our very gifted and dedicated teachers of Scottish and English Country dance that was an important part of our social and personal lives over the years. We have many happy memories of our weekly Scottish dancing lessons with Ben and enjoyed many dancing events with him, Priscilla Burrage and others in our close knit group. We also enjoyed the fellowship of the English country dancing after parties held in our homes. Particularly exciting were the yearly Scottish dinner dances where we were joined by excellent dancers from the North-East and Canada and appreciated being well trained by Ben and Priscilla.
We both admired how Ben lived his life. He was excellent in his profession and in his many hobbies such as skiing, dancing and painting, to mention a few. We were impressed by how much he relished everything he did.
We will miss Ben being a part of our lives.

Dear Mat & Family,
Sorry to hear about your Dad. I have good memories of going over to your house on North Street during our school years. In more recent years I remember bumping into your Dad on Church Street (he'd be out for a stroll from his office) and at the YMCA (I think) telling me how he could ski free now that he was in his 70s, I was impressed! Our thoughts are with your family.

Dear Mat & family,
My deepest condolences on the loss of your dad. I'm glad that our paths crossed from time to time over the years (including a day at Sugarbush with the 70+ ski club) and that I had the pleasure of getting to know him a little.

Dear Stein family,
One of my first memories at age 13, after we moved back to Vermont in 1963, was of hiking up Camel's Hump with Ben, Dot, and some of their children and my mother, Fay Abbott. Having spent most of my young life in suburban Washington DC, I had never hiked up a mountain before. I complained all day. Now, I would love it.
I remember Dot's rabbits and that Ben and Fay had a little competition going about downhill skiing into their 70's. Dot worked for, or in the same office as, my father (George Abbott) some time in the 40's and she introduced my parents to each other.
Ben and Dot were both warm, wonderful smart people, so understandably proud of all their children. Warmly, Martha Abbott

dan and family - sadness and great thanks for knowing a ben, who always ALWAYS (!) insisted on sharing his many fine drawings of folkies (incl me) on and offstage at the champlain valley folk festival or a contra dance over the years (seems he was never absent from one of our events)
