DHARAM YADAV Obituary

DR. DHARAM P. YADAV - SHELBURNE - Dr. Dharam Pal Yadav passed away peacefully in Boston, Mass., on April 4, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by those that he loved most, his beloved and devoted wife of 41 years, Meena, and his three children, Pramila Rajni Yadav, M.D., Anuradha Yadav, Esq., and Sanjeev Pal Yadav, all of Boston, Mass. He is also survived by his younger sister, Krishna Yadav and brother-in-law, Mahendar S. Yadav, of Delhi, India, who were also present. He was born on Feb. 22, 1939, in Haiderpur village, Delhi, India. He was the son of the late Lakhi Chand and Bhawti Yadav. He was predeceased by his older brother, Kanwar Pal Yadav in 2011. Dharam had a special place in his heart for his niece and nephew, Vinnie and Surender Yadav of Delhi, India, and Toronto, Canada, for their constant love and support throughout the years. In 1957, he completed his B.S. in the Physical Sciences, with honors and high distinction, from St. Stephens College, Delhi, India, which is supported by the Cambridge University Mission of England. He went on to receive his Master's Degree in Social Sciences from Delhi University. Upon finishing his Master's, he worked as a Research Officer at All India Radio and Television on a project concerned with the development of educational television programs in literacy, health care, and urban community development. He then joined the National Indian Planning Commission, working on development projects in partnership with the Ford Foundation. It was here he met Dr. Everett Rogers, the internationally recognized communications scholar, who encouraged Dharam to consider pursuing doctoral studies in the United States. Dharam joined Dr. Rogers at the University of Michigan in 1964, and went on to complete his Ph.D. in Communications at Michigan State University in 1967, under the advisement of Dr. Rogers. His doctoral thesis focused on Communication Structure and Innovation Diffusion in Indian Villages. Upon completing his Ph.D., Dharam led research at George Washington University with respect to training in intercultural communication and in management and organizational communication. In 1970, Dharam joined the faculty of the University of Vermont (UVM), where he was a professor of Communications and Psychology, with a focus on teaching and research of the cognitive sciences, media communications, cross-cultural psychology, and media psychology. During his tenure at UVM, he was chairman of the Department of Communications and served on a number of university committees including the Faculty Senate, the Faculty Senate Executive Council, and the Enrollment Management Council. The values of a commitment to lifelong education and learning, hard work, and understanding that "to whom much is given, much is expected" were so important to Dharam. It was these virtues that he constantly conveyed to his children, nieces, nephews, and countless students and advisees over a 42-year teaching career at UVM. A kind and gentle soul with an inquisitive mind, a compassionate and humble man, whose family meant the world to him, Dharam enjoyed traveling and spending time with his children, discussing Indian and global history and religion, and walking in the evenings in his neighborhood in Shelburne, where he had lived since 1974. The family is very grateful and appreciative to Tania Bertsch, M.D., Noopur Raje, M.D., Jagmeet Singh, M.D., Andrew Zhu, M.D., and Roger Laham, M.D., for their compassionate and loving care. A memorial service, celebrating his life, will be held at Ira Allen Chapel at the University of Vermont on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund with reference to The Dharam P. and Meena Yadav Charitable Fund (Acct. #1054801), which can be mailed to Dharam P. and Meena Yadav Charitable Fund, c/o Sanjeev P. Yadav, One Charles Street South, #712, Boston, MA 02116, to support academic enrichment, learning and scholarship opportunities. Although I never had the honor of meeting Dr. Yadav, I know his son, Sanjeev. If Sanjeev is an example of the strength of character which Dr. Yadav held, then I know he was a great man and will be in the hearts of friends and family forever.

As a French student, just finishing a thesis about the American perception of French products, I offer my sincere condoleances to the family of Dr Dharam P Yadav. Last year during my semester abroad at UVM I had the chance to assist to one of his classes, I thank him again for giving me the opportunity to discover more about intercultural psychology, giving me key knowledges to do my current study.

My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the Yadav family, especially today as the life of Dr. Dharam Yadav is celebrated at Ira Allen Chapel in Vermont. I was a Communications major and Dr. Yadav was my advisor. He was a guiding light throughout my years at UVM; steady, wise, patient, thoughtful and always encouraging. I hope that in moments of sorrow there will be some comfort in knowing what a gracious and wonderful person he was. He will always be an inspiration.

Dharam uncle remain in our heart , his love and caring nature will always be remembered and missed .He was a very soft spoken personality who always inspired us , I remember the efforts he made for my kids from time to time to guide them on every aspect of life. Those said and unsaid words by him while talking to him on phone in his last days of struggle for life , remain as a promise and a tribute to our uncle.

Meena, Pramy, Anu, Sanjeev.... Dharam was such a special friend. Always so kind and compassionate. I miss how he always stopped by to say hi and ask how I and my family were doing. Such an incredible memory for so many things, even the little things that mean so much. He will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched.

I was much saddened to hear the news of Dharam's death. I knew him for over 40 years and can think of few others who combined strength and gentleness as he did. Some of the many things that made him remarkable: he was an excellent teacher (his courses were highly evaluated by students although he was a tough grader – students must have sensed the integrity that this demonstrated and learned to value it); he was a colleague whom we all valued so highly for his dedication to, and hard work for, learning in general and our psychology department in particular; he was in many ways a private man but always had time for long conversations, often in the hallway outside his office, in which he would share his problems and empathize and sympathize with those of others – and always remember what those were; his family were clearly of great importance to him and a source of quiet pride, but I never heard him boast about their considerable achievements; he was a courageous man who dealt with endless serious health problems (and often the insurance issues that went with them) with surprising equanimity, patience, and wry humor. He was a gentleman and a gentle man and the world is a poorer place without him. I hope that knowing how highly valued Dharam was by his friends and colleagues is of some small comfort to his family.

I was a work study student at the Communication Dept. when Dr. Yadav was department head, & quickly came to like this kind man with a dry sense of humor. He was usually quite businesslike, but I discovered his sense of humor one day when a fellow Indian called when the professor was officially "out", eating lunch in his office. Honestly, due to the gentleman's accent, about all I could make out were "Hello" & "Dr. Yadav"--so I put the call through. A few minutes later, Dr. Yadav emerged from his office, & I said I hoped the call hadn't disturbed his lunch. He said no, & quipped, "But how did you know it was for me?" We both chuckled a bit, & he went about his business. May your good memories of this good man be a comfort to you as you grieve.
