Fulton Gregg Obituary

Fulton Mills Gregg

Fulton Mills Gregg was born in Mary Fletcher Hospital, Burlington, Vermont, on August 25, 1950, and died unexpectedly at home in Fairfax, Virginia, on July 6, 2021. His parents were the late Donald C. and Florence B. Gregg. He is survived by his only sibling, brother Bentley C. Gregg and wife Susan B., of Williamsburg, VA, and their daughter, Sara M. Gregg, as well as many cousins, especially Cameron Lane, and only one survivor in the previous generation, his aunt, Cameron's mother, the beloved 97-yr-old Gigi Green. The product of Burlington public schools, Fulton graduated from BHS in 1968; was an Eagle Scout, attended Mount Norris Scout Reservation, and Philmont in Arizona, played guitar in a garage band, and, as a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Basketball team in the YMCA Church League, advanced to the New England Church League Championships one year. Graduated from UVM in 1972 in economics, a proud member of Sigma Phi fraternity. After college, he moved to Boston and worked at Angel Memorial Hospital (animals) from 1972 until 1976, then enlisted in the Coast Guard. In 1980, Fulton attended Officer Candidate School, and served until 1993, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. He had numerous duty stations: Alameda, California; in Alaska, at Kodiak Island, St. Paul Island, and Juneau; as well as New London, Connecticut, and finally Washington, DC, with a year in Bahrain in 1992 following Desert Shield. Following an honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, he attended the esteemed Johns Hopkins School of Applied International Studies (SAIS), earning a Master's degree in May 1997. He started a PhD program in economics at George Mason University in the summer of 1997, but "there was too much calculus," so he reentered the working world, first at H&R Block preparing tax returns, and 2 years later, when the call of public service was too strong, he went to work for Immigration and Naturalization Service at Dulles Airport, eventually serving more than a dozen years for Customs and Border Patrol. Fulton retired in May 2013! He began a life of world travel, including taking 6 trips a year, most with Road Scholar, usually with an annual birding trip to Costa Rica. His retirement volunteer work was at Fairfax Hospital (3 days/week) and Dulles Airport at Travelers Aid (1 - 2 days/week). The Covid-19 Lockdown put a halt to most of this lifestyle, including workouts at his local gym. He did take daily "Sunset Windshield Tours" in his car, but those did not replace his once-full schedule of travel, volunteer work, and trips to his gym. Interment of his ashes will be at a later date in Westwood, Massachusetts, and at our beloved Sagamore Beach. Stay tuned for plans in various locations for Memorials (not services, because Fult would revolt at something too religious!). Donations may be made in Fulton's memory to the University of Vermont or the National Park Conservation Association.

It´s hard to believe that it´s been four years since we lost Fulton.
I miss hearing his voice when we use to call each other on our birth days.
A lot has changed in my life over the past 4 years but the memories I have of Fulton have not.

Though we did not remain in contact, Fulty and I served together on the CGC Rush 1976-77. He was a great shipmate, a good friend, and a respected Quartermaster. His quick intelligence brightened the Ops berthing area.
The world is diminished by his absence.

Just read of Fulton´s death in the UVM Quarterly Magazine. Condolences to the family. As a new and younger initiate into the Sigma Phi, Fulton was one of those guys who stood out in a crowd. Never forget the brother, with BSL.

I worked with Fulton at the MSPCA. We remained friends for all these years. He was my daughter´s Godfather. Even though we did not see each other that often he would call my wife and me on our birthday´s. On the 25th I called him for his birthday and got suspicious when I did not get a return call. I was shocked while searching and found the above. The world has one less good guy. Please accept my condolences on your loss. I will always remember the times we spent together.

Loss of a really great person, full of a zest for life and living!!! Many memorable moments were spent with "Fulty", including sharing his unique fondness for Boggs Cranberry Liqueur, along with high times at the "Pillars" in Sagamore. He accomplished much over his lifetime that most of us would never have the courage to endeavor. We will all miss him, his sense of humor, kindness and cordiality, and extend our deep sympathies to his close family and all those who's lives intersected memorably with his. May God bless you, Fulton. We were most privileged to know you.

The source of a true smile is an awakened mind. Never experienced any ego behavior. Mr. Greg turned a blind eye on more than one occasion, never wrote me up and always getting his message across with his half way smile as he would turn away.
Age is not the flight of years but the dawn of wisdom. The best examples are often gone too early.
Love. Always the love.

I met Fulton in the US Coast Guard on the Coast Guard Cutter Evergreen His first assignment out of The Coast Guard Academy and my First Duty out of Boot Camp. He was a great Guy When he was Officer of the Day in Port he would often Make his way down to the Enlisted men's Rec Deck area to just hang with us see what we were Doing Never Thinking he was above any of Us Even though he was in Command of the Duty Section. Fulton was one of a Kind great man to be around. Christmas Day 1982 Our Ship was in the Dry Docks for Extensive Hull repairs in The Coast Guard Yards,Fulton was Officer of the Day we were low in Spirit being on Duty ,Fulton said to me There is Good Christmas Eggnog today with his Grin. He had spiked the Eggnogg with Rum for a little Christmas Cheer to lift our Spirits. I often Wondered about him, Knowing he was from VT and Myself a Vermonter Hoping to bump into him again. RIP Mr Gregg You were the Best!

So many wonderful thoughts about shared times over the past 50 years, spanning both coasts and the Eastern seaboard from Vermont to Florida....struggling daily to believe this kind and generous man is no longer among us! "Fulty Babes", as he always signed off on his notes, cards and emails, was the epitome of the thoughtful friend who never forgets a birthday, an anniversary, a holiday or any other meaningful time and made sure to make contact when such events occurred. My last contact with him was in a phone call shortly after Mother´s Day in May, to respond to a voicemail he had left me earlier that day. We talked for quite a while and he expressed with excitement and hope the notion of venturing up to VT during the summer or early fall and we were looking forward to having him as a house guest as usual. I still have the cheery voicemail he left on my phone wishing me a happy Mother´s Day and I find myself listening to it often, trying to process never hearing his voice again. I also find myself remembering words that he said so often during our conversations, which now seem so ironic, "Never take your good health for granted!"
Fulton was a steadfast, wonderful friend and I will miss him sorely..... sincere sympathies to all of his family on a life well lived and ended too soon.....Mary Lynch
