JULIE GRUNVALD Obituary

JULIE CARPENTER GRUNVALD - WILLISTON - Julie Carpenter Grunvald, age 54, passed away peacefully at her home on Jan. 18, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Her kindness and engaging ways always endeared her to everyone she met. Her strength and determination allowed her to live a full and inspirational life with cancer until the end. Julie was born July 24, 1959, to the late William and Daisy Riddel Carpenter of Montpelier. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1977, and the University of Vermont in 1981 with a degree in Physical Therapy. Julie was an active and caring person who loved the outdoors. Her interests included walking, bird watching, snowshoeing, skiing and spending time at her camp on Lake Champlain. She enjoyed working with young children at the Williston Ski Program at Cochran's Ski Area. She enjoyed many years and friendships as a Physical Therapist. Her best times were those spent with her family. Julie truly knew what it meant to care for and accept others. Her kindness and empathy will be missed by all her family, friends and colleagues. Her hobbies included gardening, rug hooking and felting, Mahjong, reading and traveling with family and friends. She was an avid fan of her children's sports, never missing an event. Julie married Lloyd Grunvald on July 29, 1990. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, and their three children, Miles (22), Hannah (20), and Warren (18), all of Williston. Julie also leaves behind her four siblings and their spouses, USAF Col. (Ret.) William Carpenter and wife, Iris, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mary Phalen and husband, Kim, of Montpelier, Sara Gage and husband, Tom, of North Clarendon, and Brian Carpenter and wife, Kate, of Stowe; mother- and father-in-law, Harriet and Marcel Grunvald of Burlington; brother- and sister-in-law, Jeff and Mary Grunvald of Colchester; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at Temple Sinai, 500 Swift St., South Burlington, on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at 10 a.m., with interment to follow in Ahavath Gerim Cemetery Temple Sinai Section, 204 Patchen Road, South Burlington. Following, all friends and family are invited back to Temple Sinai. Shiva will be held at the Grunvald home in Williston on Thursday from 2 until 6 p.m. and Friday from 1 until 5 p.m. Arrangements are by Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Directors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Julie's name to the Cochran's Ski Area, c/o the Williston After-School Ski Program, 910 Cochran Rd., Richmond, VT 05477.

One of the things that impressed me most about Julie was how genuine she was. When she would ask how I was doing, I could see that she was actually listening and interested in where I was at. So often in life, it is easy to go through a conversation by just going through the motions but not once did I feel that way with Julie. I always left the conversations with her feeling refreshed and more positive than before.
Maybe it was because of how genuine she was, maybe it was how kind & caring she was, or maybe it was because of that award winning smile she had but whatever it was, Julie had a spark that I will sorely miss.

I'm so sad to see this obituary. I spent time with Julie as a member of a support group at FAHC. It was a magically-connected group, and though we went our separate ways after a year, the group and Julie, in particular, had a huge impact on me.

I didn't know Julie as well as I would of liked but she was a fellow Lyman Driver. The few times I did meet her I was always impressed with her huge smile and an incredibly selfless attitude. Her legacy will live on in the wonderful family she leaves behind. Rest peacefully.

We are saddened and our hearts are glad at the same time as we reflect on Julie and the fact that we will no longer see the impact that she had on so many lives. The sadness comes from the fact that her beautiful smile and kind words will longer be seen or heard. We are glad that we will always have the memories of that smile and the kind words. We are saddened and glad at the same time because Julie is free of her pain, and saddened that we will never again see her or feel the joy of her presence. She suffered selfishly, not wanting to burden others with her pain and sorrow. We will miss her, we will reminisce, we will mourn. I am so sorry to learn of Julie's passing. I always admired her for her positive nature, infectious smile, generous contributions and abiding commitment to her children. In addition to knowing her through WCS, I also shared a love of our Irish Soft-coated wheaten terriers with Julie. My heart goes out to the Grunvald and Carpenter families. Julie was such a beautiful person. I remember her smile, compassion, and love for her family. I saw Julie several years ago in Portsmouth, NH, celebrating her 50th birthday with Sara and Mary , and thought how wonderful it is to be so close to your sisters and truly enjoy spending time with them. I'm so sorry for your loss.
