Justin R. Beebe

Age: 26 • Bellows Falls

Justin R. Beebe, 26, of Deemont Road passed away Saturday, August 13, 2016 while fighting the Strawberry Fire at Great Basin National Park in Nevada. Justin was born in Springfield, VT on February 1, 1990, the son of Sheldon and Betsy (Burrington) Beebe. He was a 2008 graduate of Bellows Falls Union High School and attended a post-graduate year at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, VT. He called himself a mountain man: From fly fishing to hunting to hiking and more, he was always outside and an avid outdoorsmen. He was an intense and talented athlete who excelled in ice hockey, soccer, baseball, and snowboarding. He knew how to live and love life and those he shared it with. His favorite pastime was planting apple and oak trees at his family's Vermont camp, and meticulously caring for them each year. His sidekick lab, named Boo, followed him wherever he went and the two of them knew how to make everyone they met feel extremely lucky to have crossed their path. He wanted so much to be a hot shot, so he hit the road to meet with many crews and left them each with a can of his family's homemade maple syrup so the superintendents' would remember the "Vermonter". His family and friends know he would have won the best mustache contest at the end of the season. He truly was living his dream thanks to the Lolo Hotshots. He was a bright light that God needed more than us. Please take a long walk in the woods to honor him.

Justin is survived by his parents Sheldon and Betsy Beebe, his sister Jessica, and the love of his life, who he was planning to marry, Jennifer Zaso.

There will be a memorial service at the Bellows Falls Union High School auditorium at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27. There is also a memorial service for Justin in Missoula this weekend on Saturday, August 20th at 11am at Ogren Park at Allegiance Field, 700 Cregg Lane, Missoula, MT. Both services are open to the public.

Memorial gifts/donations can be made either to the Justin Beebe Memorial Fund which is set up to award scholarships and assist organizations who specifically assist children with dyslexia to get outdoors, learn sportsman skills, and connect with nature to help them find a path to success in life much like Justin found. Checks can be made payable to the Justin Beebe Memorial Fund and sent to 10 Deermont Rd., Bellows Falls, VT 05101. Another organization the family would like donations to go to is the Wildland Firefighter Foundation who has been so helpful to the family and other families who have lost their loved ones in the line of fire duty. Donations can be made here wffoundation.org.

Sheldon, My wife and I send you our condolences. Although we never met Justin, I wish that we had. He was so brave and caring.
The word "Hero" is so often thrown about, but your son truly deserved the honor. Take care of yourself.

I am extremely saddened to hear about the loss of your son. This really touched me in a personal way. I worked for the FS in fire, on engines then a hotshot. My spouse has been in fire for over a decade, a hotshot as well. Your son must have truly been a special man to have touched so many lives the way that he did, and leave such a positive impression with the Hotshot community in such a short period of time. It really takes a special person to do the job. I pray for Justin and your family every night when I go to bed. I sleep well knowing God has another special angel watching over wildland firefighters. I am sure Granite Mountain Hotshots welcomed him with open arms. God Bless you.

Betsy, Shel, and Jessica: I'm so sorry. Twenty six years of Justin's smile, strength, and unquenchable energy is both a great and complete gift and not nearly enough. I know you will miss him always, and can only hope that all the good your family has given to this community comes back to you tenfold, to uphold you as you learn to go on. My memories of Justin are very warm and just a little blurry -- not because they're from so long ago that they've faded, but because he was always in motion. May he not rest in peace, but *move* in peace - hike and climb his way from one end to the other of heaven's most magnificent wilderness.

He was always a sweet and innocent person. No matter who you were when you came across his path he would put a smile on your face. I have known Justin's family for a while as his mom used to help take care of my brother and I when we were little and my mom was sick. He is going to be very missed. Fly high brotha and keep living your dream while your up there with god.

I cannot imagine your grief and extend my deepest sympathies to your family. Based on newspaper reports, Justin was obviously an outstanding young man who made his family justifiably proud.
Being a native of Burlington the odds of being related to you must be very high and I have lost a relative I did not have the pleasure of knowing.
May God's peace be with you.

My heartfelt condolences to you and all who know Justin personally. My children Chesea and Alex remember playing with Justin on Oak Hill Terrace when staying with their grandma Rose Fowler years ago.
A vibrant young man and a life cut way too short, but my belief is that our loved ones are with us always. His spirit remains in those apple and oak trees. God bless.

Sure gonna be weird knowing you won't be around , won't see you during hunting season with that big smile on your face when you get that deer or that bear. You made me laugh so hard so many times ! I am watching so many people hurt knowing they will never get to be with you again and it is so hard to watch. But I know you and you would not want any of us to be sad! But let us honor you for the hard work you have done . You deserve it!! Gonna miss you brat
