LYNFORD LUMBRA Obituary

LYNFORD LUMBRA - EAST FAIRFIELD - Lynford Lumbra, 77, passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, in the Pillsbury Homestead in St. Albans where Lynford had resided for the past two years. He was born in Montgomery on Nov. 3, 1936, the son of the late Hardy and Erma (Touchette) Lumbra. Lynford was a graduate of Brigham Academy in Bakersfield, Class of 1955. He married Johanna Lumnah on Sept. 12, 1956. In 1969, Lynford purchased what would be Lyn's Market in East Fairfield with his wife, Jo, and together they operated it until their retirement on Aug. 18, 1999. Lyn and Jo purchased the store from Lyn's father, Hardy, whom had purchased the store in 1949. He enjoyed many facets of operating the store, especially custom beef cutting. In 1996, he was recognized with the Local Storekeeper Award by the Vermont Grocers Association for his outstanding service to the community and excellence in store keeping. Lynford was a very active member of St. Anthony/St. Georges Catholic Church in East Fairfield serving on the Parish Council, Lawn Party Committee, and as a Eucharistic Minister. He and Jo loved traveling on scenic bus tours, and the trips they took to Rome, Hawaii and Aruba. He also enjoyed spending time with family and close friends, especially at camp on Metcalf Pond. More recently, Lynford enjoyed participating in activities, lunch dates and outings with his friends at the Pillsbury Homestead. His family and friends will remember him for his great sense of humor, constant smile and great attitude. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Colleen and Arthur Sauve of Milton, Chris and Nancy Lumbra of Essex Junction, Craig and Joan Lumbra of East Fairfield, Carrie and Peter Chlumecky of Hinesburg, and Cory and Tammie Lumbra of Vergennes; grandchildren, Chad Sauve, Casie Adams and husband, Zack, Cayla Sauve, Kyle Lumbra and wife, Sylvie, Johannah and Lauren Lumbra, Callie and Celsey Lumbra, Nicholas, Lynn and Max Chlumecky, Phillip and Taylor Pidgeon, and Reid and Ross Lumbra; great-grandson, Connor Adams; sisters, Bertha Lamore of Bakersfield, and Lorraine Austin of Newcomb, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Lynford was predeceased by his wife, Johanna (Lumnah) Lumbra, on Dec. 4, 2011; brothers, Arnold "Puffer" Lumbra and wife, Kathleen, and Harlan "Cheeman" Lumbra and wife, Katherine; and brothersin-law, Lionel Lamore and Reginald Austin. Lynford's family wishes to give a special thanks to the staff and caregivers at the Pillsbury Homestead for the high quality and loving care that they gave to Lynford throughout his stay. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 116 Church Road, Fairfield, with the Rev. William Giroux celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Following the Mass, family and friends are invited to gather at the East Fairfield Fire Station for a luncheon. Interment will be held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at St. Isidore's Cemetery, 169 Mountain Road, Montgomery Center. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
