VERONIQUE GASSETTE Obituary

VERONIQUE GASSETTE - SOUTH BURLINGTON - Veronique Gassette, 102, passed away Sat., Aug. 4, 2012, at the Gazebo Apartments, where she resided. Born in Burlington on Oct. 22, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Eva (Cartier) Gassette. A 1932 graduate of Trinity College of Vermont, Veronique worked for a number of years as a counselor for the State of Vermont, Vocational Rehabilitation. Veronique was very interested in genealogy and anything historical. She did extensive French Canadian genealogical research; compiled a book listing the marriages of St. Joseph Parish from 1834-1930; and collaborated on the most recent history of St. Joseph Parish. An honorary member of the Vermont French-Canadian Genealogical Society, she was also very involved with the Vermont Historical Society. A devout Roman Catholic, Veronique was honored by Bishop Kenneth Angell at a Recognition of Women in Ministry Service, in Rutland, in 2002. She was very proud of the fact that her grandfather, Joseph Cartier, fabricated in 1887, the iron cross and rooster for the steeple of Burlington's St. Joseph Church. This was done on the ground in front of his blacksmith shop on North Street, across from the present Lawrence Barnes School. She is survived by her niece, Joan Gassette Dennis, of Albany, N.Y.; her grandnephew, Dr. Stephen C. Dennis and his wife, Sheila; and great-grandnephews, Benjamin and Grant Dennis, all of Newport Beach, Calif. She was predeceased by her brother, Alfred J. Gassette. The family would like to thank all who were involved with Veronique's care and showed interest in her over the years. These include her Goddaughter, Sr. Joyce Barrett, RSM, Mariette Moreau, the staff of the Gazebo Apartments, and Hospice. Visiting hours will be in the Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home, 85 N. Winooski Ave., Burlington, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, in St. Joseph Co-Cathedral. Burial will follow in Old Mount Calvary Cemetery, Burlington. Arrangements are by Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Directors. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Not sure what to say?

Miss Gassette was a quiet neighbor on Heath St when I was growing up. Always friendly and kind, but mostly keep to herself. I will always remember the Sabbs she drove, which were certainly unique at the time and not very popular, but she drove them for years. I recall a white one and a blue one. She was highly respected on Heath St., and am astonished at her long life.

Dear Joan & family,

I was fortunate to meet Veronique several years ago at a Trinity College Reunion and when I told her I was related to one of her college chums, one would have thought I was family by her greeting. My great aunt, Mary Crowley, was her school chum and recently inquired after Veronique.
On behalf on myself and the Trinity College of Vermont Alumni Board, I send our prayers & condolences to you and your family

Veronique was a very dear friend to my mother, Mary Joachim. They had graduated from Trinity College together.
Veronique had done our family tree for my father's side, which set in motion my interest. I visited her often at her Heath St home and we discussed memories of Burlington and our families. She was a very special lady and leaves behind much of her reseach that will aid many French-Canadien families in their quest for their roots.

Veronique was a very kind and intelligent lady. She was very strong in her Catholic faith. We went to visit her in her home in So. Burlington. She was very gracious and readily discussed our ancestry. She was first cousin to Loretta (Barbeau} Bettis and I'm Loretta's son. When we last saw her, she was 95 yrs old, still witty and still driving...Heaven has gained a new bright star. Charlie

Veronique was a very feisty lady - very positive in her love for her church, her heritage and devoted to her family and her special friends. Although she lived alone until she went to Pillsbury Manor, she was kept company by well- loved cats. I am happy to have known her.

Joan, my thoughts are with you and your family. Veronique is one lady I will never forget. It was my pleasure to know her.
