David L. Lloyd, 94, of Butler passed away peacefully on Dec. 11 at his residence.
Dave was born July 5, 1924, in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Leesburg, Pa., by the late Rev. William Lloyd and the late Lydia Jergens Lloyd. He was predeceased by Jean B. Lloyd, his wife and best friend of more than 66 years, who passed away on Jan. 30, 2017.
Dave was the owner/operator of the Lloyd-Johnson Co. on Main Street in Butler from 1950 until 1984. He then went on to be partner and property manager in the D-J Realty and KLTF Real Estate until 2007. Throughout it all, he enjoyed investing in oil and gas properties and the stock market.
Dave was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 759th Field Artillery in the European Theater. After the war was over in Europe, his outfit was deactivated and he was assigned to the 617th Quartermaster Depot Co. in Brussels until returning to the U.S. for discharge.
While in the Army, Dave studied civil engineering at the Citadel Military Academy and marketing at the University of Biarritz in France (Honor Award for highest achievement in the class). In 1949, he graduated with a degree in economics from Westminster College where he had met Jean (Class of '48), was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, played saxophone in a local dance band, and with his friend, Dale Johnston, ran a haberdashery, florist and candy distribution businesses.
Dave was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church and served as an elder.
He loved Butler and over the years, devoted enormous energy to many organizations including the Butler Area Chamber of Commerce, where he served as president (at that time, the youngest in PA) and chairman of numerous committees, Credit Bureau (director), Symphony Association (director), Travel Convention Bureau (vice president), Red Cross Board, Ad Hoc Committee for Feasibility Study for Butler Area Vo-Tech School, Community Development Corp. (one of the founders and an emeritus director), City of Butler Renaissance Commission Board, Butler Transit Authority Board, Butler Business Association (president), United Way (president, two terms), Sparkplugs CoC Division (president), Butler Blind Association (vice president), Cancer Society Board, Lutheran Service Society of Western PA Board, Moraine Trails Council Boy Scouts of America Executive Committee, Rotary Club (board and numerous committees), and Co-Founder of the Butler Area Landlords Association. From 1975 to 1991, he served as a director of Friendship Federal Savings Loan Association and its successor, following a merger with Landmark Savings Association.
Among the numerous recognitions Dave received over the years for his community service were the Butler Area Junior Chamber of Commerce Junior Man of the Year in 1959, Leadership Award-Butler County United Fund in 1969, and Meritorious Service Award from Friendship Savings Loan Association in 1982. In 2009, he received the Chamber of Commerce's William A. Morgan Jr. Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Dave and Jean jointly received a Westminster College Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011 for "having made an outstanding difference in their community."
Dave will be long-remembered for his quick wit and ability to make people laugh in nearly any circumstance. He listened tirelessly to the Glenn Miller Orchestra while mixing the most amazing martinis and Manhattans one could ever imagine. An avid golfer, Dave was a longtime member of the Butler Country Club.
He is survived by his two sons, David Lloyd Jr. of New York, N.Y., and Larry Lloyd of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and a daughter, Lydia Olson of Roswell, Ga.; and their respective spouses, Meg Mortimer, Nolia and Rick; his grandchildren, Gabriel, Margaret, Jocelyn, Duane, Renee and Andrea; seven great-grandchildren, with another on the way; and two nieces, Cindy and Karen.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Horam; and a grandson, James Olson.
LLOYD - Friends of David L. Lloyd, who died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018, will be received from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 230 E. Jefferson St., Butler, with the Rev. John C.R. Silbert officiating.
A private burial with military honors will be provided by the officers and members of American Legion Post 117, Butler, American Legion Post 778, Lyndora, and the VFW Post 249 of Butler and will be held at North Side Cemetery.
