Harold Cahill Obituary

BR>Harold P. Cahill Jr., 85, of Beaufort, S.C., formerly of Butler, died Jan. 15 in Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, S.C.
Mr. Cahill was born Feb. 13, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was the son of the late Harold P. Cahill Sr. and Frances Shattuck Cahill.
The family moved to St. James, Long Island, N.Y., in 1932. In early 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific. At the end of World War II, he was honorably discharged.
In 1947, Mr. Cahill graduated from Yale University with a degree in civil engineering and was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy. In 1952 he earned a Master's degree from Princeton University. In 1973, he was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal. After many assignments as a Navy Seabee, including tours on Kwajalein and in Spain, he became Commander of the Eighth Naval Construction Regiment of Pennsylvania and Ohio, and he retired to the Navy Reserve as a Captain.
He spent the next 10 years with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as director of the Construction Grants Program. Following three years as director of Harbors and Waterways for Milwaukee, Wis., he was promoted to Vice President of Waste Management of North America for the Western region in Irvine, Calif. He was director of technical services for design and construction of industrial projects and related capital programs in gas and wind-driven turbine power plants, including the rail haul program for handling urban area solid waste recycling and disposal for metropolitan Southern California.
In 1994, upon retirement, Capt. Cahill and his wife moved to Beaufort where he was a member of the Parish Church of St. Helena and a member of the Harmony Masonic Lodge 22.
Surviving are his first wife, Margaret Cahill of Saxonburg; his wife, Roberta of Beaufort; his children, Martha Cahill of St. Louis, Mo., Bonnie Cahill of Saxonburg, Harold P. "Chip" (Robin) Cahill III of Miami, Fla., Coralie Cahill of Saxonburg, Allison Cahill of Crafton, and his stepchildren, Michael Jones of Merritt Island, Fla., and Amanda (Ricky) Dawson of Port Gibson, Miss.; and six grandchildren.
