Herbert Killmeyer Obituary

With deep love and sorrow, the family of Herbert F. Killmeyer Jr. announces his peaceful passing Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in Los Gatos, Calif., at the age of 91.
Born July 11, 1933, in Butler, to parents, Herbert F. Killmeyer Sr. and Hazel (Nebel) Killmeyer, Herbert was a man of quiet strength, deep faith and enduring devotion to his parents and family.
Herbert attended Norwich University in Northfield, Vt. Following two years of study, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served his country. He was stationed at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, Calif., where he met the love of his life, Beverley Ann Klemesrud, playing bridge with friends. On Sept. 11, 1955, he married his forever sweetheart, Beverley, and began their life together at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine, as navigator in the Strategic Air Command (SAC), home to the 101st Air Refueling Wing.
Herbert proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957 as captain and principal duty navigator, flying TDY (Temporary Duty) missions in North Africa, Greenland, England and France. His military service continued when they moved to Campbell, Calif., and he served with the California 129th Air Commando Squadron of the Air National Guard, from 1958 until 1965.
After his military service, Herbert built a respected career in civil engineering and land surveying. He worked for Coburn, Pleum & Eckstine Consulting Engineers in Los Altos, Calif., and later founded his own successful land surveying company. Over the course of more than four decades, he helped shape the Santa Clara Valley, surveying countless homes, shopping centers and stadiums that became lasting parts of the community. Most notably, the Stanford Linear Accelerator in Palo Alto, and commercial sites of what would become the pioneer firms of Silicon Valley.
Herbert had a deep love for California's natural beauty and history. A proud member of the Mount Diablo Surveyors Historical Society and Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, he enjoyed studying and preserving the heritage of the land he worked.
He loved exploring the Sierra Nevada, especially Pinecrest, where he often walked the trails of those who came before us - finding peace and inspiration in the same paths once traveled by his ancestors.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Beverley Ann Klemesrud; two sisters, Nancy McNelis (Peter) and Sandra Kran (Michael); three daughters, Bethann Heath (Tim), Kathy Killmeyer Temby (Myles) and Kristy Hendrycks (Paul); eight wonderful grandchildren; and 15 beautiful great-grandchildren.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert F. Killmeyer Sr. and Hazel (Nebel) Killmeyer; and siblings, Eileen Mickley, Donald Killmeyer, Jean Dewhurst and Joan Krahe.
He found joy in singing, reading, fly fishing, smoking his pipe and sharing quiet moments in nature with those he loved. Family road trips to national parks were among his greatest pleasures, and he passed on to future generations a profound appreciation for history, nature and togetherness. Herbert also was a very proud San Francisco Giants fan and enjoyed many family outings at the ballpark.
Herbert F. Killmeyer Jr. lived a life of purpose, legacy and love. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
KILLMEYER - A public memorial service for Herbert F. Killmeyer Jr., who died Tuesday, May 6, 2025, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 23, at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, San Jose, Calif., and a private graveside memorial will follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sierra Club and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Grandpa's stories, songs, knowledge and unconditional love have played a part in just about every decision of my life. My love of history and my love of nature tie directly to a lifetime spent with Grandpa showing me how history and nature are intrinsically linked to the shaping of generations. Grandpa would walk me through the woods up at the cabin and as he smoked his pipe take me on paths that led to old logging trails and teach me how to navigate the forest by identifying landmarks as we made up silly names for oddly shaped trees or faces we could see in rocks.

His songs were infectious and his jokes so corny that I could never help but to laugh and sing along just to feel a part of grandpas never ending joy.
To know my grandpa was to know joy and love and faith. I am forever thankful that I have the honor of being his granddaughter. I miss you Grandpa!

What a great brother! He loved life, family, singing a song (or two) and with a smile.

I loved asking him about our relatives as he could remember their detailed history and enjoyed sharing. He definitely had mom's memory & could update me on the latest he knew.

He and Bev made a great couple. They were so fun to be with when we were stationed at the Presidio.

I must share a story about Herb; when mother brought me home from the hospital Herb said, "you must take her back because I wanted a brother!". That story was definitely repeated through the years reminding us of the day and we cherished it.

May you rest in peace Herb, love your fourth sister Nancy

To a wonderful brother who will be deeply missed & always prayed for.

Herb had a great love for all he knew & met & at his age could tell wonderful history stories of our family & relatives in Butler where he grew up on Pearl St.
To this day he could name all the streets in town & how to get to our grandfathers Hotel The Monroe in Butler or how to get to Dad´s business down town The Keg or the streets out to our cousins Portman Dairy Farm.

My Husband & I took Herb to hear a lecture in Palo Alto, Calif given by an old Butler boys who became Secretary of The State George Schultz.
After the lecture Herb waited outside to confront him & tell him that when he was a little boy in Butler, Pa he & his friend Pauly Habin hid in the bushes & watched George kiss a girl in the back seat of Georgie´s car.
The Secretary got a big laugh out of that as did we all.

Herb just had a great way with people & everyone loved him and boy he had a wonderful memory.

Sleep well did brother & I'm sure your up their reminiscing with all the relatives & having great laughs.
Love you,
Sister Sandy

When dad was in the hospital recently I asked him a few questions while we spent our last days together. Trying to distract dad from the pain, I asked him what his favorite dessert was if he could have anything under the sun, and dad shared that he loved warm gingerbread with real whipped cream on top. He also shared that his mom, Hazel, use to make that for him and his brother and sisters when he was a young boy. So I hope our dad’s getting a lot of warm gingerbread and real whipped cream up in heaven. Dad shared that the best of times for him were traveling with our family. He sure loved his family. We talked about our trip up north through Washington and Canada in our camper and going back east to Butler, PA to visit his relatives as well as mom’s cousin Liv and Loran Volland from Wisconsin. Dad enjoyed meeting new friends too. He reminded me of his trips with our mom’s friends at her high school reunions. Those were some great memories for Dad. He was always such a friendly person who stopped to talk with people just to share maybe a little bit about himself or maybe even some history of the county he was so proud of as a Land Surveyor. Dad was truly a special man. He had integrity, good morals and values, he was kind, helpful, and generous. He would literally give the shirt off his back for anyone in need. I’m pretty proud to have been raised by two great parents. Dad and mom were a great team. And I’ll always remember the wonderful times we’ve shared together. Thank you dad for everything. You truly were our rock, the best dad a girl could ask for. God bless you dad, and may you be surrounded by peace and love from your family and friends in heaven. We love and miss you.
