John McGrogan Obituary

John F. McGrogan
John F. "Jack" McGrogan, 85, of Butler died Nov. 29 of cancer-related complications.
Jack was a dedicated husband, a loving father, a beloved grandfather, a reliable co-worker and a good friend to many. He also was a devoted servant of our Lord as a faithful member of the St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.
Jack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mildred "Mim" McGrogan; and six children, Maureen (Ed) Rooch, Margaret (John) Boben, Alice (Terry) Stockwell, Jack (Lesley) McGrogan, Joe (Von) McGrogan and Maribeth (Jim) DeShields. He also is survived by nine grandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews.
Born Sept. 8, 1925, in Carnegie, he was the son of Daniel and Catherine McGrogan. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Dan and Hughie; his sister, Loretta Lafferty; and his beloved grandson, Allen Rooch.
Jack graduated from the St. Luke High School in Carnegie, where he played basketball and football. In his senior year, he caught the winning touchdown pass in Pittsburgh's Catholic School League Championship game.
In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a radio/radar man aboard the USS Bullard. In 1945, his ship was engaged in combat off the coast of Japan.
In 1948, Jack married his hometown sweetheart, and they moved to Butler.
Jack worked for Armco Steel for 40 years, retiring in 1988.
Along with the many friends he made at Armco, he enjoyed taking his family to outings at Armco Park and playing golf at the Armco Golf Club. He and his family also enjoyed many summer vacations at Lake Erie and visiting friends along the St. Claire River in Port Huron, Canada.
Exercise and physical fitness were an important part of his life. He was often seen jogging around the athletic field in Butler or riding his bike around Lake Arthur. Another one of his passions was traveling to visit his children in California and Texas.
Jack attended many sporting events throughout his life, including the last football game played in Pitt Stadium and the first baseball game played at Enron Field in Houston, Texas. He saw his beloved Fighting Irish of Notre Dame play a home game against Michigan and a road game against
Stanford in California.
Jack was a long-standing member of the VFW Post 249 in Butler and a member of the Butler Quarterback Club.
He always led by example and was very proud of the city in which he lived. For his volunteer efforts, he was awarded with a "Key to the City" by the Butler City Council.

Mim, Jack and you were among the first to welcome me to the neighborhood many years ago. How much I and others we met along the way enjoyed his infectious good nature and humor as we walked and dodged traffic together along Belmont. I missed him these past fews months and you also, Mim.

He lived his life with joy and pleasure in all that he experienced. Through him, I learned about your family and friends and know how much he loved and was loved.

My sympathy to his family. He will be missed and celebrated by many.

Jack was the first person in the neighborhood to welcome us. He and Mim always said hello when we were out gardening and he always made a point to ask about our son. The thing that struck me most about him was how lovingly he spoke of Mim. He will be missed.

We always felt that Jack was much more than John's father-in-law and Margaret's father to us. He was the guy that went tailgating with us at the Texans game and always ready to go out for a drink when he visited. I remember very well going to Mathias' Bar and having a great time. He was truly one of us and part of our close group of friends. I will truly miss him a lot. You guys are in our thoughts.

Maureen and Margaret,

So sorry to hear about your dad. I remember him as a fun and caring person. Loosing parents is difficult. No time on earth is long enough to spend with those we love, or to prepare our hearts for good bye.

I am not a religious man, but Big Jack McGrogan was God’s servant--living his life as the Scriptures instruct. Humble, reverential. They were not instructions to be taken lightly. Thou Shalt not…covet, lie, steal, idolize. Love thy neighbor, love thy enemy. As difficult as these instructions can be, that was Jack McGrogan’s essence. Everything else—family, friends, work, play—were by-products. Mr. McGrogan’s is a life to be celebrated, if not envied.

Jack was always welcome in our neighborhood when he and Mim came to visit our dear friends Margret and John Boben. After my father passed away he became someone I truly enjoyed being with and sharing stories as he was like my dad, someone who was kind, friendly and special. He always made you feel like a friend with his sense of humor, love of family and friends, a great football fan and buddy that would always enjoy a cold beer and game with you at the local pub. I will miss him every fall and spring. May God bless Mim and all of his great family for generations to come.

I knew Jack through Boben and Margaret and what a great guy he was. Jack, like my father and father-in-law all served in the Navy and fought in WW II, all part of the greatest generation, thank you Jack for your service. When I say that "I" always looked forward to Jack's visits, it was really the "crew", and while Jack was Margaret's dad he was also one of us and we all enjoyed his sharp wit, humor and a tale or two to tell.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the McGrogan family and know that his "shipmates" here in Houston will miss him as well.
Clear sailing Jack, Anchors Aweigh.
