Leslie and family--
What a wonderful man Tom was! He was a true gift to our region. I knew him through politics as I served in the State Senate and in the US House and he was always a supporter. He never shied away from making his point and providing me with wise counsel regarding issues and ethics. He was his own man--an intelligent and independent thinker--with the strength of character that far surpassed his physical challenges.
I know that the good he did during his own public service and through his support of others made a huge positive impact on our region.
May God bless you during this time of great loss. Please be comforted in knowing that many people will always think of him as a great advisor and friend, and a selfless servant. We were blessed to know him.

To Leslie and children:
As you probably know Tom and I were good friends growing up. We played sports, hung out, spent time together and would even grab our guns and head for the woods around Mt.Jackson for a few hours. We liked to talk politics and have few beers.
One of the big annual festive events in Sept.took place by Hickory Creek under Palkovich's bridge known as the creek party. I'm sure you have heard stories about that. One year, there was a abnormally large crowd and it seemed extra festive and entertaining. Some one jumped off the brige (the creek was only about a foot deep at that time of year), rope pulling contest over the creek, someone showed up with a new suit on and got baptised in the creek, another tried to drive his jeep down the creek and disappeared for the evening. Tom and I were a couple lead advocates and the entertainment "czars" for this community event.
I remember the next morning as I was bathing in the creek, Tom got woke up by one of Palkovich's cows licking his face.
There was a time when we had a fire drill at school and Tom, myself and a couple others jumped out the 2nd floor windows into the pine trees. That made "prof" happy.
There are also a few holloween trick or treat antics that were performed under the cover of darkness on halloween night such as the out houses that showed up on the school lawn.
We had many fun experiences growing up in Mt.Jackson.We found lots of self made entertainment. There are many more stories to tell but they are better off being told in person. Writing is too incrimidating.
We both enjoyed visiting Uncle Dale's farm and helping out in the summers.
Tom was a good fun loving and interesting friend. I am deeply sadened by his passing. We were certainly part of the Mt.Jackson culture. I think that era ended sometime back. But those of us that knew Tom will always carry his memory.

Cousin John Andrews

How sorry I was to hear yesterday from Dan Vogler that the Senator had passed. How well I remember in 1980 when Tom called me to say that he would not run for re-election, and that if I was interested, I should get busy. Tom was a first-rate gentleman and legislator who was well respected by everyone in Harrisburg. He was especially helpful to me in my early years for which I was always grateful.
