William Powis Obituary

William J. Powis
William J. Powis, 77, of Seven Fields, formerly of Peters Township, died Wednesday.
Born Sept. 9, 1929, in Stockdale, he was the son of William T. and Elsie Darbyshire Powis.
He graduated from Charleroi High School in 1947. He then went on to a 38-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, where he began as a railway mail clerk and retired as director of maintenance for the Allegheny District of the Post Office and Federal Courts Building in Pittsburgh.
Mr. Powis was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member the VFW Post 879 in Cranberry Township.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the John E. Mair Lodge 729 F&AM in Mars. He also was a member and past president of the Cranberry Township (Noon Club) Rotary, where he was awarded the Rotarian of the Year Award for 2003 and was the 2006 recipient of the Service Above Self Award. He was a former member of the McMurray Rotary.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Elaine Raicos Powis; a daughter, Jan Kowalski of Cranberry Township; a son, William N. Powis, of Franklin, Tenn.; and six grandchildren, Trevor and Leah Powis and Stephen, Todd, Maria and Matthew Kowalski.
POWIS - Friends of William J. Powis, who died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Glenn-Kildoo Funeral Home, 130 Wisconsin Ave., Cranberry Township. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, c/o Development Department, UPMC Cancer Pavilion, Suite 1B, 5150 Centre Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
Masonic funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

I worked with Bill for many years at the Pittsburgh post office. He always had my respect as a person who had time for people and treated them fairly. He lead by example.
