Eddie Reeves, age 59, of Calhoun, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 23rd, 2025, in Columbus, GA. He was born on November 20th, 1965 in Alpharetta, GA. He was a 1983 graduate of Milton High School and a 1988 graduate of Georgia Southern University, where he met his wife Stephanie. They were married on August 18th, 1990, and moved to northwest Georgia following college to raise their family. He was a devoted family man, servant leader, and respected community advocate, leaving behind a legacy of faith, integrity, and service to others.
Eddie is survived by his loving wife Stephanie and their two children Bailey and Rucker Reeves (Libby Upton). Eddie was the son of Selina Kent and the late Benny Reeves, Jr. He is also survived by his sisters Frankie (Charlie)Broussard and Serena (John) Martin, niece Meredith (Chad) Malinak, their children Grace, Landry, and Brigid Malinak, stepmother Linda Reeves, and many other loving family members. He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents, Troy and Edith Rucker, maternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Stewart, paternal grandparents, Benny Sr.,and Grace Reeves, and nephew, Reeves Broussard.
Eddie dedicated more than three decades of his career to the field of Human Resources at Shaw Industries, where his leadership, vision, and compassion touched the lives of thousands, and always kept people at the heart of his work. Following his time at Shaw, Eddie joined Starr-Mathews Agency in May of 2019 as the HR Benefits Practice Leader. Eddie's professional success was matched by his deep commitment to service in his community. He faithfully served for more than 16 years on the Calhoun City Schools Board of Education, helping shape the future of education for countless children, including but not limited to his own. He served as Board Chair for close to a decade and exceeded the Black and Gold Standard of Excellence, never missing a work session or Board meeting. He attended School Governance Team trainings, Charter System Foundation conferences, Georgia School Board Association trainings, and community events, always representing Calhoun City Schools with pride. He was a consummate public servant in all aspects.
Eddie gave countless hours as a volunteer coach for the Calhoun Recreation Department, coaching little league football, softball, baseball, soccer, swim, and basketball. He was a mentor to many, encouraging and molding young men and women to develop confidence and character. Eddie assisted WJTH Radio with game highlights for the Gordon Central Warriors and the Sonoraville Phoenix as the play-by-play commentator for more than a decade, which earned him the name "Fast Eddie". He spent the next decade as the voice of the Calhoun High School Yellow Jacket Football program. He was a passionate Yellow Jacket, and this role brought him great joy. He will certainly be missed in this seat on Friday nights. To honor his work in the Press Box, a special plaque will be forever placed at his seat to honor his time as the announcer from 2014 to 2025.
Eddie was President of the United Way of Gordon County from 2007 to 2013, Chairman of the Calhoun/Gordon County Chamber of Commerce from 2003 to 2009, and Board Chair of Junior Achievement of Northwest Georgia from 2015 to 2019. Eddie was a graduate of The Gordon County Chamber of Leadership, Calhoun, Gordon County. He became an instructor for the program and worked with more than 500 participants. In recognition of his leadership and passion for service, Eddie was named a Leadership Georgia Graduate in 2008, where he joined a network of leaders dedicated to addressing the opportunities and challenges facing the state of Georgia. This honor reflected not only his professional achievements but also his unwavering commitment to strengthening his community and state. Beyond his career and community service, Eddie will be remembered first and foremost as a devoted husband, father, and friend. He lived out his values daily-serving others with humility, generosity, and a deep commitment to his faith and community. Eddie and his family attended Calhoun First Baptist, and his desire to follow God's example showed through his actions as a father, husband, coach, and friend. Whether in his church, through his work, or in personal relationships, Eddie's kindness, encouragement, and unwavering dedication left a lasting mark on all who knew him.
Eddie Reeves life was defined not by titles or achievements, but by the love he gave to his family and the positive difference he made in the lives of others. His legacy as a husband, parent, public servant, leader, community builder, problem solver, and encourager will live on in the countless people he inspired. In recognition of Eddie's exceptional service to the Calhoun City Schools' Board of Education and his unwavering commitment to the Black and Gold Standard of Excellence, the Board of Education will designate its boardroom as the Eddie Reeves Board Room now and forevermore.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 2, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home.
Services to honor the life of Eddie will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Calhoun First Baptist Church with Dr. John Barber officiating. Heartfelt eulogies will be shared by his children, Dr. Michele Taylor, and Mr. Jim and Mrs. Cathy Mathews. Pallbearers include Charlie Broussard, Mark Volkmer, Brent Myers, Brian Cooksey, Ken LoCurto, and Joe Taylor, Sr. Honorary Pallbearers include Reeves Broussard, John Martin, Calhoun City School Board Members who served with Eddie, his coworkers at Starr-Mathews, and members of his Georgia Southern Fraternity, Sigma Nu, Theta Kappa Chapter.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
