Edith Sapp Obituary

Edith D. Sapp

Corpus Christi, TX

Edith Sugden Durham Sapp ("Edie"), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend peacefully passed away on October 8th after a difficult battle with heart disease. Edie was born in Louisville, Kentucky on August 25, 1955 to Edwin Allen Durham II and Mary Kaye Tarrant Durham Holt. The family moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and later to Dallas, before settling in Corpus Christi. Edie attended St. James Episcopal School and Cullen Jr. High School in Corpus Christi, where she cultivated early childhood friends. Edie attended St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio, making dear lifelong friendships and playing field hockey and tennis. After high school she matriculated at Sweet Briar College before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and graduated with a degree in Education. She subsequently earned a Masters in Special Education at CCSU (Texas A&M Corpus Christi). Edie was a gifted teacher and educator. She taught at CCISD and preschool at St. James.

On June 24, 1978, Edie married the love of her life, Henry Monroe Sapp, and they cherished forty magnificent years together. They were blessed with two children, Edwin Clayton Sapp ("Clay") and Mary Martha Sapp Brown ("Mimi"), who were everything to Edie. Edie loved her son-in-law Zachry Brown and her precious grandchild Henry Badger Brown ("Badger").

Edie was a treasured friend to so many. Her love for people was effusive, and she was adored for her kindness and laughter. Edie was fun and loving! She was a competitive tennis player with a fierce forehand. She will be remembered for her gourmet cooking and delicious, powdery brownies, which she graciously shared with so many.

Edie was a member of Las Donas de la Corte, The Order of de Pineda and Charity League; and she presided as President for each of these organizations. She was an active member of the Esperanza Garden Club, Corpus Christi Cotillion Club, and the Corpus Christi Womens Investment Club. She also served on the St. James School Board and Vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

Edie is preceded in death by her father (E.A.), her mother (Kaye), and her stepfather Benjamin Dean Holt ("Peter"). She is survived by her sister Mary Tarrant Durham Clark (James Travis Clark "Jimmy"); sister Eleanor Kaye Durham; sister-in-law Martha Sapp Downs; nephews and nieces Travis Clark (Katharine), Edwin Clark (Megan and daughter Samantha), John Durham, Virginia Durham, Mary Park Durham; Tracy Downs Darling, Kristina Downs Fawcett, Alfred Downs; Alejandra Rivas; the Holt family (Peter, Anne, & Ben); Uncle Richard Sugden Durham; Aunt Penelope Tarrant Morton and numerous cousins.

It was always enjoyable to be with Edie. I looked forward to each time I was able to be with her. I loved her smile and she had the skill of handling every situation in an admirable manner. I write this with great sadness in my heart as we all know she is gone too soon. Her laughter and kindness will remain in our hearts and memories forever.
