CLEVELAND Hazel Margaret King Cleveland, 86, passed away February 25, 2009 in a Yoakum hospital from heart failure. She had resided in Stevens Nursing Home in Yoakum, Texas for the past nine years. Hazel was born July 19, 1922 in Campti, Louisiana to Pearl and Ellis Joseph Goodson. She was a graduate of St. Vincent's Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana, and a 1940 graduate of Cotton Valley High School in Cotton Valley, Louisiana, where she was a cheerleader during her senior year. She married Pete King in May 1940, and eventually settled in South Texas where they raised five children. Hazel graduated from Texas A & I College in Kingsville, Texas in May 1967 with a master's degree in early childhood development. She taught in the Robstown and Corpus Christi Independent School Districts until her retirement in 1992. She touched many lives while living in Violet, Agua Dulce, Orange Grove, Robstown, and Corpus Christi. She was active in cub scouts as a den mother, a garden club member, and a member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Robstown for many years. Her culinary and sewing skills were legendary. Hazel was a believer in CASA of the Coastal Bend, and volunteered her time for many kids in court while she was teaching. She is survived by three daughters, Connie King Philmon (Jerry) of Beaumont, Judy King Johnson (Don) of Hallettsville, Nancy King Coonrod of Corpus Christi; a son, Joe Brady King of Conroe; three grandchildren, Chris Patterson (Jen) of Humble, Suzanne Seitz (Marvin) of Victoria, and John Patterson of San Diego, California; six great-grandchildren, Cami Sherrill of Dallas, Sara Gibbs of Victoria, Colin Sproul of Flower Mound, Landry and Hayden Seitz of Victoria and C.J. Patterson of Humble; and two sisters; Anna Mae Foster of Roanoke, Virginia, and Frances Case of Monroe, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed Cleveland, and former spouse Pete King; son, Michael Jeffrey King; grandson, Stephen Johnson; granddaughter, Catherine Patterson Sproul; sister, Billie Holly; and son-in-law, Floyd Patterson. Visitation will be from 2 P.M. until 8 P.M. Sunday, March 1, 2009 in Sawyer-George Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited at 10:30 A.M. Monday and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 A.M. Monday, March 2, 2009 at Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Robstown with Monsignor Michael Howell as celebrant. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Robstown, Texas.
