Jeffrey St. Onge Obituary

Our dear friend and sibling, JEFFREY NEIL ST. ONGE, age 58, died peacefully on October 3, 2019 at Abode Contemplative Care for the Dying in San Antonio, TX after a prolonged battle with cancer. Jeff was born on February 17, 1961 in Corpus Christi, TX, the youngest child of four to Maxine and Joseph St. Onge. Jeff graduated from Richard King High School in Corpus Christi and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, majoring in Business Administration. Jeff was truly gifted creatively and artistically and was drawn to the advertising profession. Upon graduating from Trinity, he co-founded the agency Roberts/St.Onge Advertising in San Antonio, with Pace Foods and Clark American Checks among his notable clients. He later moved to New York City to build his skills and contacts, working for premier agencies including Perkins/Butler Chiat/Day, Ogilvy & Mather, Grey Direct and Saatchi & Saatchi/Conill Advertising, ultimately founding and running Jeff St.Onge & Friends at which he served as Creative Director for 14 years. His client accounts included Harry Winston, De Beers Diamond Promotion Service, Columbia House, Nestlé Calistoga Water, AOL, and BMG Entertainment among many others.

Jeff's original plans were to stay in New York for two years, yet he ended up spending 19 years in the Big Apple. Jeff returned to Texas in 2006 where he established St.Onge Creative, an agency in Austin dedicated to serving clients throughout central Texas. Professionally, as well as personally, Jeff was passionate about life. In advertising, his philosophy involved thinking strategically and working collaboratively. He was happy when designing and thinking about a creative solution, whether it be a company name, logo, product, website or campaign. He loved the creative process. In addition to his creative gifts, Jeff enjoyed music, the big screen, playing (and winning) board games of all kinds, sharing a meal (especially Mexican food), laughing and spending time with friends. He touched many lives including colleagues, professionals he mentored, and the friends he made throughout his life. To say Jeff was beloved is an understatement. He was a great listener, advocate, and loving individual who nobly put his own needs aside for others.

Jeff is preceded in death by his parents, Maxine and Joseph. He is survived by his brothers, Douglas St. Onge and Scott St. Onge, his sister, Sally St. Onge, and his beloved nephew Seth St. Onge. A memorial service in celebration of Jeff's life will be held at the Margarite B. Parker Chapel at Trinity University on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, or to make a donation in honor of Jeff, please contribute in Jeff's name to Abode Contemplative Care for the Dying, 8619 Post Oak Lane, San Antonio, TX 78265, or to the charity of your choice.

Jeff and I worked together in the mid 80's, both of us so young and new in the advertising biz. Today, I had a rush of many fond memories of Jeff ... things we did, places we went, meals we had, laughs we shared. His presence is strong and lasting. He really had an impact. The world needs more Jeff St. Onges. Rest in peace Buddy. Peace to your family.

Jeff, you are missed. Your light, your wit, your humor and your creative energy are missed. Thinking of you today.

On this anniversary of losing Jeff, I wanted to share that one of my ways of remembering him daily is the collection of yellow rose bushes that I planted in front of my house. Every year we add two more yellow rose bushes in his memory. I know that Jeff would have preferred orchids, a flower he loved, but the yellow roses for Texas survive much better in the frigid winters of Vermont. When the roses are dormant, I enjoy a lovely framed picture of Jeff smiling in our house. He is never far from my thoughts, and my heart still aches at the hole he left behind.

What can I say about a heart as big as the sky. Jeff was one of the most creative, most generous, most witty, most gentle and sweet souls I met during my years in advertising, and more importantly, during my life. We worked together, grew apart, and then re-united a few years back after I had lost my husband to cancer. Jeff returned to New York for several visits and we had one of our wonderful marathon lunches and then we lost touch again late in 2018 because of my caregiving duties with my mom, and then we traded calls back and forth, and then we both fell out of touch. I am so very, very sad to hear that you are no longer with us here on earth. But I know you were never really earthbound. You were always an angel walking amongst us. Even when we had our differences and our ups and downs, you were a bright and beautiful light. You will be missed dear friend and revered colleague.

We worked together in New York. We were both in the business. I was a writer and he was the art director. We worked on the same clients. We did business in the US and overseas (in China). We had a great friendship. We were colleagues. We loved to talk to each other. Jeff will be missed.

I knew Jeff in NYC. We were both in advertising. Together we worked in accounts here in New York City and for many clients. Together we were creatives (I was a copywriter and he was an art director) and we both ran a business in the US and even overseas in China. Jeff was wonderful. A colleague, a business associate and a friend. He is missed.

Jeff was not a perfect person, but he was probably the closest thing to a perfect person that I have ever met. His penetrating intelligence and creative talent were overshadowed only by his enormous compassion, kindness and empathy for others. In the 29 years I was lucky enough to be his friend and (sometimes) creative collaborator, I found Jeff to be someone who often put others before himself. His love of Tex-Mex food, his fantastic laugh that would begin with a whoop, his pride in his Texan roots, his faith, his loyalty to his friends, his love for his siblings, his humility, his worship of Diet Pepsi, affinity for deep and meaningful conversations, love of cheese fries and Popeyes' chicken...I count myself as blessed to have had Jeff in my life, even though the absence he leaves behind will never be filled. I have so many, many loving memories of him.

My thoughts and prayers turn to Jeff's sister, brothers, and extended family at this incredibly sad time.

Jeff was a spectacular man, of immense creative intellect and appreciation. His passion for all things visual and authentic will color my memories in all the days to come as I miss his dear, much beloved self. It is too soon for him to be gone from us. My thoughts are with his many wonderful friends and loving family.
