Lawrence Wolter

Bishop, TX

Lawrence William Otto Wolter, a resident of Seguin, Texas and former longtime resident of Bishop, Texas joined his almighty Savior on July 11, 2017 at the age of 95. He was born on March 14, 1922 in Austin, Texas to Lawrence Augusta Wolter and Emma Kasper Wolter, who were of German heritage. In 1924, the family moved to Bishop to make their home and farm the land purchased by Otto Wolter (Lawrence's grandfather) when Lawrence was 2 years old. They were one of the founding families of Bishop. Lawrence graduated from Bishop High School in 1940 and proudly served his country in the Pacific Theater of WWII upon graduation for 4 years. He was awarded the Good Conduct and Victory Medal and honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to the family farm.

Lawrence was an active community member. He served on the Bishop CISD school board. He was awarded the Bishop Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Service Award and Falfurrias Loma Blanca SWCD Outstanding Conservation Farmer Award.

The American Legion was a big part of the Wolter family. He was active in the American Legion Post 99 in Kingsville and a charter member of the American Legion Post 185. Lawrence and several other World War II veterans built this organization from the ground up. In 1959 the Bishop Post received its charter and in the early 1960's the American Legion was built. Lawrence served as the building manager and commander of the Legion for many terms. Lawrence along with a group of Bishop Veterans donated their own money and ran the club like a business. The Legion held dances, bingo, and private parties to raise money in order to purchase the land. Today the American Legion remains an integral part of the Bishop Community. He also served as 3rd Division Commander and 3rd Division Oratorical Chairman and many other positons of honor within the American Legion. Even well into his senior years, Lawrence remained an active member and focused on helping fellow veterans by taking Christmas gifts to the Veteran's Hospital in San Antonio yearly, local needy families, and supporting youth programs such as Boys State. He played a very active role in the annual American Legion Oratorical Contest, and American Legion college scholarships for Bishop High School graduates. He continued until he relocated to Seguin in 2013.

Lawrence enjoyed farming and ranching. He loved his ranch in Falfurrias which he built with his own hands. It brought him great joy until his death. He always enjoyed being outdoors and always had advice on how to plant or repair things.

Lawrence was a lifetime member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Bishop, Texas serving on church council including president within his term on council. He was an associate member of Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin and looked forward to attending services. Faith Lutheran Church welcomed him as if he were a founding member. He enjoyed his lemonade and cookie after service and the many hugs and kisses he received from the warm and generous members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Eugene Robert Watt Wolter, his great grandson Colin Krogh Holst. He is survived by his sister Emily Augusta (Gene) Hutchins of Corpus Christi. He is survived by his four children, Dale (Katie) Wolter of Corpus Christi, Texas, Judy (Bill) Zimmer of Houston, Texas, Nancy (Chris) Morton of McKinney, Texas, and Elaine (Randy) Bennett of Seguin, Texas. He is also survived by all of his beloved grandchildren, Jana (Jeff) Holst, Lori (Brian) Long, Mikayla Campos, Matthew, Kailey, and Caroline Morton, and Brant and Brooke Bennett, his great grandchildren, Kayla Holst and Blaike and Wes Long.
