Michael Thomas Dellinger

Corpus Christi - Michael Thomas Dellinger, 55, died suddenly from a massive stroke, April 2, 2019. He was one of four sons, born to Jimmie and Pud'n Dellinger. He graduated from Agua Dulce High School and Texas A&M University, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He earned his MA in International Relations from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. After college, he served in the U. S. Peace Corps in Honduras.

Michael was a long-time educator in South Texas. He retired from Ray High School where he taught government, history, Spanish and the Theory of Knowledge, from the International Baccalaureate program. He was selected Ray's Teacher of the Year, coached the Challenge Team for more than ten years, and always lit up when former students spotted him around town.

His love of the outdoors ranged far and wide. He was always game for camping in the Hill Country or taking long birding drives down Padre Island National Seashore. He traveled all over Mexico and Central America, spending several summers in Patzun, Guatemala, where he taught English to Guatemalan orphaned children. He traced his grandfather, Harry Juergens' footsteps to the peak of Mount Popocatepetl in central Mexico, posing for a photo in the exact spot where his grandfather had eighty years prior. He enjoyed playing the guitar and listening to everything from Marty Robbins to Fito Olivares. A natural conversationalist, 'Miguel' fondly shared memories with his many friends, colleagues, his Vernon's 'knitting club', and the ladies at the HEB check out. He always left people with a smile, and will be remembered for his clever wit, and uncanny insight on just about every subject matter.

He is preceded in death by his father, Jimmie, and brother Lewis. He is survived by his mother, Pud'n, brother Jamie (wife Karen), and children Murphy, Elise (Chris) and Shelby and his brother Lawrence (wife Elane) and their children Leighton (Daniel) and Francie (Carson) and his dear friend, Alicia Hoover.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2019 at Maxwell P. Dunne Funeral Home, 1222 Morgan Ave. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that evening.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2019 at St. Pius X Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Amos Rehabilitation Keep (ARK) in Port Aransas, Texas. Web address: friendsoftheark.org

Today, I came looking for this man online in hopes to find him, and tell him that he changed my life. He was my teacher nearly 20 years ago, and if not for his influence, I know my life would be different. My condolences to his family, and those who loved him. He was a remarkable person, an amazing teacher, and a quality human being.

It saddens me to have found out about the loss of such a wonderful teacher.

I don't know what came over me today, but I started looking for my gleeful government teacher online. I wanted to send him a message to ask him how he was doing and to give him an update about my journey through life after high school. He made such a positive impact during my senior year. I arrived in Corpus Christi without fluently speaking English and struggled to communicate in school. He would practice his Spanish with me but encouraged me to speak English. He knew I was capable of doing so. I remember that after taking my STAAR exams, he asked me for the results. At the time I did not know what these exams meant. When Mr. Dellinger saw my results he stood me in front of the class and told everyone that I've passed all of them on my first try. He was very proud of me. It didn't make sense at the time, but it makes a lot of sense now. He knew that language was not a barrier, he never underestimated me, he made me feel capable. Mr. Dellinger was a great man. I will never forget him.

Rest in peace, Maestro.

I was fortunate to have known Michael and his family for so many years, that I can't count them....but i knew him as a friend, and then as a faculty member at Ray High School, and also a friend and teacher to my son, Travis....his life was way too short here on earth, but he surely made an impression....my love to his mother, Pud'n, brothers, Jamie and Lawrence, and all their families,...and to Alicia....we miss you already Micahel....love, jena xox (Pickett Kauffmann) xox

I had him for World History and the great thing about Mr. Dellinger is that he did not only teach, but taught you how to think. When we were learning about China, one day he just pulled out the Tao Te Ching and began to read from it for class. He also had a great sense of humor which made class always a joy.

I had Mr. Dellinger for my World History class. The great thing about him as a teacher is that he taught you how to think: I will never forget when learning about the China he just got out the book of Tao Te Ching one day and just start reading from it for class. Besides teaching you how to think, he also had a great sense of humor and made class fun.

Indeed, Michael taught us all how to live, give, and love; he had touched many hearts and minds and changed them. His mission on earth was accomplished. Sadly, we were only able to borrow him for this short time but it was enough according to God's plan. My condolences to all who love him and will miss him. Know, he is delighting in the Beatific Vision among all the angels and saints. ♥ Elaine Longoria Carter

A lot of the children in our family were blessed to be in Mr. Dellinger's government class. They would relate how lively the conversations were in that class. I had the gift of seeing him when I sold t-shirts at the Ray cafeteria during football season. He always had a positive word. Our family grieves with you all on the loss of your beloved son and brother. Please know you are lifted up in our prayers for comfort and strength as you travel the coming days. Big hugs to you all
