Ruth Mildred Gambill Wakeland

Bishop - Ruth Mildred Gambill Wakeland formerly of Bishop, Texas departed this life on December 9, 2019 in New Braunfels, Texas. She is resting in the arms of God's eternal love in an everlasting place of joy and peace.

Ruth was born November 25, 1920 in Shamrock, Oklahoma to Troy Gambill and Emma Bowen Gambill. Her dad was an oil field worker and at the age of four she moved with her parents to Texon, Texas where she grew up. Texon was a model oil company town in Reagan County, Texas. The town was developed next to the Big Lake Oil Field and Santa Rita No. 1, the discovery well on the University of Texas lands in the Permian Basin. Ruth moved to Corpus Christi after graduation from Reagan County High School to live with her aunt and uncle while attending business school. After school she worked in Corpus until she met and married Richard H. (Dick) Wakeland of Bishop, Texas. They were married October 17, 1942 in Alice, Texas. They had two children, a daughter and a son. Dick farmed, and she stayed home with the children. In 1962, when the children were in middle school, she returned to work as secretary to the Bishop High School principal. In 1965 she began her banking career with Mercantile Bank in Kingsville, Texas as secretary to the president of the bank. She was given officer status in 1972 and was made an Assistant Vice President in 1975, serving as Investment Officer, Loan Officer, and Public Relations Officer. She retired from banking in 1992.

While working in Kingsville, she was active in community affairs, serving on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce as Membership Vice President for a number of years and as President in 1983. She was also a member of the Tourist Board and the Board of City Development. In 1977 she was awarded a lifetime membership in the Chamber for her work in enlisting new members. She was involved in the Harden Study Club of Bishop, Kleberg County Ladies' Golf Club Association, Navy League, Kingsville Board of Realtors, Christian Women's Club, and Kleberg County Republican Women's Club. Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church of Bishop since joining in 1944 and a member of the Bishop Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 60 years; her sisters, Helen Frances Gambill Zardo, and Margaret Fern Gambill Buchanan Morgan; her nephew, Troy Buchanan and niece, Margaret (Chonia) Zardo Raschella.

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Susan and husband Tom Ballard; son, Richard H. (Rick) Wakeland, Jr and wife Lorrell. Grandchildren: Blaine, Melanie, Richard, Kevin and Lisa; Great-grandchildren, Daniel, Troy, Aaron, Staci, Ashlee, Ryan, Amanda, Caleb, Devyn, Wyatt; Great-great-granddaughter, Everly; and many nieces and nephews.

We want to express our sincere thanks for the loving care Mom received by the staff at Rio Terra in New Braunfels and the caregivers from Encompass Health. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 311 E. 5th St., Bishop, TX 78343 or the Bishop Cemetery Association, PO Box 142, Bishop, TX 78343.
