Gwendolyn Hauk Obituary
Gwendolyn Mae "Gwen" (Lewis) Hauk Dr. Dr. Gwendolyn Lewis Hauk 87, passed away at her home in Buckholts Texas, on October 16th. She was born on May 12th, 1938. Gwen is the daughter of Darrel & Willa May Lewis, from Conroe. She is survived by her son Kyle Hauk, sisters Carol Minze (David) of Katy, TX, and Kathy Painchaud (Bruce) of Corpus Christi as well as niece Laura Minze of Dallas, nephew Austin Painchaud of Georgetown, niece Kim Claussen of The Woodlands, and nephew Damon Lane of The Woodlands. She graduated high school from Pattison with a class of five in 1956. Gwen attended Sam Houston State Teachers College, where she met Jimmy Hauk in 1961 & later that year in December they were married. She graduated with her Bachelors degree, and would go on to get her Masters and PhD. The PhD was obtained from Texas A&M in 1984, and she was a proud Aggie. Gwen worked in education, teaching English at Buckholts High School for nine years and started in 1961, then at Temple Junior College from 1970 to 2004. She became an English teacher and head of the media center, then became head of the English department, and later moved into administration on May 30th 1996 as the Dean of students at Temple College, as well as Vice President of Temple College. She worked at TC from 1970 to 2004, retiring as vice-president emeritus after 34 years of service. Even after retirement she was active in senior university in Georgetown. All in all Gwen Hauk spent 46 years in education. My mom lost two husbands to cancer. She is a role model and a very strong person to persevere through these hardships.
Gwen married Jimmy Hauk December 23rd of 1961, They were married until Jim's passing June 10th 1996. Mom made Temple her home from 1997 to 2002 when she moved to Georgetown where she lived until 2021 when she came back home to Buckholts where she lived with her son Kyle for the rest of her life. Gwen & Jim made their family and lived in Buckholts Texas from 1963 to 1996. Gwen served as the mayor of Buckholts for 11 years from 1987 to 1998, where she hosted Governor Ann Richards at the cotton festival June 21st, 1990. My mother had a passion for education and helping students further their education. She would often coach Buckholts ISD students in UIL events.
Gwen had a passion for politics and often wondered what might have been if she had gone political science instead of English. Gwen had many interests from travel, to crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, watching her shows (Murder she wrote) and movies, as well as supporting many philanthropic causes as well. For many years she was quite the seamstress, making her own outfits in the 70s and patching many football uniforms for her husbands and sons football teams. She loved her dogs Ralph, Marley, and Scout, as they brought her much entertainment and joy. Gwen loved to watch the butterfly migration, and often kept plants to attract them. Gwen was a member of the Luthern church in Buckholts for many years.
Food for thought, Mom had a deep appreciation for Greens Kolache's but her passion rivaled the character Bubba Blue from Forrest Gump when it came to shrimp, she loved it as often as she could have it and in all forms.
Jim Hauk was the love of her life, and they loved to travel and loved their son Kyle, the family was very close throughout their lives.
Celebration of life service will be Saturday October 25th at 10:00 a.m. Marek-Burns-Laywell funeral home in Cameron, Texas. Followed by a lunch reception TBA..
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Jim Hauk Scholarship fund at the Buckholts State Bank.
