Wilmer Lloyd

1923 - 2015

A life-long Coloradoan, Wilmer was born December 20, 1923, in Erie, Colorado, the son of an immigrant coal miner, and died April 21, 2015, in Canon City, a friend to many and a tireless worker for numerous local organizations. His only extended time away from the state was his US Navy service aboard the USS Farragut troop transport in the South Pacific during WW2. Shortly after the war's end he married his high school sweetheart Marguerite Renfrow of Florence, Colo., in San Francisco, Calif. They returned to Colorado to start their marvelous marriage of more than 57 years, raising their daughter Janine and son Bill. True to his natural retailer spirit, Wilmer launched his career at the Safeway store in Trinidad, and managed locations in Walsenburg, Lamar and LaJunta, retiring from the firm in 1976. In "retirement" he moved to Canon City, working full-time for Gibsons Discount as assistant manager for more than a decade and volunteering extensively around town. Wilmer was a lively member of Lions Club throughout his life, including helping found the Canon City Sunrise meeting. He also supported the Canon City VFW post 12063, handing out bingo packets, carving turkeys for their annual holiday feasts or any other task their small band of brothers needed done. He freely lent his talents to support the mission and work of the Canon City Church of Christ on Franklin. He is survived by daughter Janine Gann (Bill); grandchildren Melissa (Chad) Johnston, Doug (Gail) Mills and David Nelson; along with 8 great grandchildren; and son Bill (Laura Taylor-Lloyd), grandchildren Marcy (Bari), Nick (Jennifer), Natalie, and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Marguerite, father William Henry Lloyd, mother Mary Young Lloyd and siblings William, Ted, Viola, Jack, Gertrude, Stan and Thora. Visitation, 1:00 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2:00 p.m Monday, April 27, Holt Family Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Lakeside Cemetery.
