Nicola Lucilio Obituary

Nicola (Nick) Lucilio Jr.

age 58, passed away peacefully with his wife and family by his side on June 8, 2021 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Nick was diagnosed with inoperable sarcoma in December of 2019 and had been receiving treatment. For most of the time since, Nick was able to tolerate living with his illness; however, within the recent past, the cancer had spread throughout his body and his quality of life was significantly diminished. Death was not his enemy at the end; although we were all sad to lose him, we knew his suffering had finally ended and he was at peace. Nick was born on October 12, 1962 to Nicola Sr. and Alice Lucilio.

Besides his parents, Nick is survived by his wife of 37 years Connie (DeMarco) Lucilio; his siblings Lisa Lucilio; Joe (Jessica) Lucilio; Mary LaFleur; and Jonathan Lucilio; mother-in-law Shirley (Fred) Merchant; brother- and sister-in laws John (Judy) DeMarco and Carol (Donny) Grandjean; nieces Jennifer (Ian) Buchholz and Alison (Ryan) Mirabedini; nephews Alfred IV (Haely Enot) LaFleur, Joshua (Alicia Bosnakovic) LaFleur, Ryan LaFleur, and Robby DeMarco; and great niece and nephew Ellie and Enzo LaFleur. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, co-workers, and friends. Nick was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father-in-law Frank DeMarco, his brother-in-law Alfred LaFleur III, and his nephew Luke Grandjean.

Nick was a 1980 graduate of North Canton Hoover High school. While still in high school, Nick started working at Acme-Click in North Canton, where he met and later married the love of his life, Connie. He attended Stark Technical College where he earned a 2-year degree in Electronics; he then attended the University of Akron where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. His first job after college was at Allen-Bradley in Cleveland, Ohio, where he performed technical writing. He followed this up in December of 1984 with what would become his career working at the Timken Company in Canton, Ohio; he just celebrated 35 years of working there as a Senior Process Control Engineer, writing software and trouble-shooting any problems that arose during the steel-making process. Nick was a good man and a gentle giant. Although he and Connie did not have children of their own, they were very close with their nieces and nephews, one of whom just passed away unexpectedly last month at the age of 25. Nick was a mentor and friend to each of them, never afraid to give them advice whether they wanted it or not (he knew they needed it). Nick enjoyed his work very much, as well as solving technical, mechanical, electrical, and electronic problems. He loved taking things apart to see how they worked and then putting them back together. Nick saw the world in a unique way that typically made his stories laugh-out-loud funny, including up to his last week of life. Nick enjoyed boating, water-skiing, walking, spending time with family (especially while eating a good Italian meal), vacations at the beach, and swimming at his father-in-law Paco's pool. He referred to his family members as "associates," e.g., 'Associate Connie'; he did not suffer fools; and he was happy to award a 'low-five' where merited. Nick was devoted to his wife, his parents, and his family. Connie is a retired RN and was Nick's primary caregiver until the end. Nick's family would like to thank Dr. Vennepureddy, the staffs at both the Aultman Cancer Center and the infusion center; the dialysis team at the Fresenius Kidney Care Center; as well as Dr. Marsh and the home hospice nurses for making Nick's final days as comfortable as possible.

Arrangements have not been finalized but will most likely be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Luke Grandjean Memorial Scholarship in Nick's name at any branch of the Stark Federal Credit Union or by using the link here: https://fundly.com/in-loving-memory-of-luke-grandjean fbclid =IwAR3ZW5 bkvrmbLiNWmqxsi_Z2qgPqv-VN9K whWA6RB nu0cFjI6B0dthvAjZo#comments; to the American Cancer Society; or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to the Mark R. Vrabel Funeral Home, North Canton 330-452-4041.

My dear oldest brother, Nicky,
Tomorrow is your 59th birthday and you are not here on earth to celebrate it with us. I hope it is a great birthday in Heaven. It is hard to believe that you are no longer here. It does put a smile on my face to think about you, Al, and Luke all together and what you are all up to. I´m sure there is a lot of work to do-those of us left here need watching after. You are a wonderful brother and uncle and I hope you know how much you mean to all of us. I know the time you were sick was a struggle and you worked hard to handle it the best way you could. You will always stay close in my heart along with all our loved ones that are no longer with us. Tell our grandparents and everyone else Hi for me. Love and miss you lots. Happy Birthday Nick!

Nick was a pleasure to work with and the most detailed person I knew at Timken. May you rest in peace after your courageous battle.

I always enjoyed conversations with Nick during the many Johntony family reunions we attended. He was always interested in learning about his Italian heritage, and asked many questions about his ancestors. He was always gracious and interested in the lives of others.

Dear Connie,
I’m so sorry for your loss. May the love of friends and family help carry you through your grief. We have lost touch with each other over the years. I never had the privilege to meet Nick, I’m sure he was a great guy. I’m glad that you had many happy years together. Take care of yourself. Sending my love.
