Richard McGirr Obituary

Richard McGirr
of Marana, Ariz. died Dec. 9, 2013 from brain cancer. Rich was born in Ohio Jan. 25, 1941 to Katherine (Trott) and Junior McGirr. An avid sportsman and hunter, his love of competition and personal drive to achieve his goals defined much of what made him a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and trusted friend. Employed by The Travelers 1963-1974. He lived in Hartford, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco and back to Hartford selling and eventually training others how to sell employee benefits. Richard and family then moved to Worcester, Mass. to work for State Mutual. After retirement, Richard and Carol moved to Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz. Golfing, hunting and entertaining friends over meals they cooked (sometimes of the dove and quail he'd bagged) brought many new friends into their lives. The annual Christmas brunch at their Highlands home became a beloved tradition for many and of course the 'Mr. Christmas Pants' were a thing of legend.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Carol; daughter, Teresa (Ken) Mottram of New Hampshire; son, Michael of South Carolina; granddaughters, Summer and Danielle Mottram of New Hampshire; sisters, Margaret (Fred) Nichols and Susan Robbins of Ohio; brothers, John (Carol) of Florida, Jim (Karen), Dale (Geraldine) of Ohio; many nieces and nephews too.
We are honoring Rich's wishes to have no services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Casa de la Luz Hospice Foundation, 7740 N. Oracle Rd., Tucson, AZ 85704.

Dick and I were classmates at Mount Union College. We had many good times together. I am saddened to see of his passing. My thought and prayers go out to Carol and his family. Life is simply the gift of a day at a time.

Richard was the salt-of-the earth, greatest sense of humor, generous and kindest of friends. He leaves a terrible void for those of us lucky enough to have known him. My heart goes out to Carol, Michael and Terri.
