Sam Purses Obituary

Sam A. Purses
age 93, of Canton was transformed in death to a new life in union with the Cosmic Christ on Feb. 4, 2015. Sam was born on Sept. 24, 1921 to Dominic and Anna Presutti.
Besides his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his loving wife, Clara, his siblings Jim, Pam and Mary and his grandson, Jonathan. He is survived by his children, Sam (Teresa) Purses, Pam (Dan) Hughes, Lee (Jeff) Orin, Debbie (Pete) Ferguson, Vicki (Steve) Ashbaugh and Rick (Pam) Purses; as well as 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and many extended family members.
Sam was a 1939 graduate of Canton McKinley where he honed his athletic skills playing basketball, football and baseball. In baseball, Sam played a pivotal role in the Bulldog's 1937 and 1939 State Championships. He was later drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. Sam, along with his brother, Pam, are members of the Canton Amateur Hall of Fame. He was also a life member of the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist. Sam's retirement from the Post Office gave him the opportunity to keep in touch with his lifelong friends playing golf, bowling, volunteering at the St. John's Samaritan Table and sharing stories at the mall. As a father, grandfather and great grandfather, Sam was an ever-present image in the life of his family.
Our entire family extends our deep appreciation for the great care provided to our father by the staff at Bethany Nursing Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist with The Very Reverend Ronald Klingler and Father Tom Bishop as celebrants. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday 1-4 p.m. at Lamiell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Samaritan's Table c/o Community Services of Stark County. Condolences may be made to:
