Thomas Schervish Obituary

Thomas W. Schervish

age 80, of Perry Township passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021 at home watching his beloved Browns. Tom was born Sept. 5, 1940 in Detroit, Mich., to the late William and Marie (Elum) Schervish. He was a 1963 graduate of the University of Detroit and an Officer in the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army. In 1967, he came to Stark County and began an active business and civic life. Tom owned and operated several Burger King Restaurants throughout Ohio and Michigan and was Chairman of Stark Management Services and the Center Ice Sports Complex. He was a tireless advocate for downtown Canton and our local business community. Tom served on numerous boards of directors, most notably as Chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Trustees, Stark County Catholic Schools, and Walsh University.

An avid golfer, Tom also enjoyed playing poker and gin with his buddies and rarely missed an opportunity to hit the tables in Vegas. He was strong in his Catholic faith. Tom loved his family beyond measure, especially his four grandchildren, and never let a moment pass when he didn't count his blessings.

Tom is survived by his wife, Angela (Brio) Schervish with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. They have two children: son, Thomas (Sarah) Schervish II, their children Anna and Tommy, daughter Amanda (Jon) Kendle and their children Liam and Isla. He has three brothers, Herbert Schervish, David Schervish, Dr. Edward Schervish, all of Michigan. Tom is also survived by countless cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for the family at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Massillon with Fr. Raymond Paul officiating. Final resting place will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Tom's memory to Walsh University Thomas Schervish Scholarship Fund (Advancement Office 2020 East Maple Street, North Canton OH 44720) or Thomas W. Dear Schervish Family,

Having known your family both socially and caring for your beloved pets through the years, I can attest to Tom's LIFE WELL LIVED. The greatest expression of this trait was not just the generosity of time and wealth to the community. Tom also raised a family that was equally as gracious, kind and generous.
Tom is irreplaceable. But the family carries a legacy for us all to attempt to emulate.

Angela & Family,
I am so sorry to learn of Tom's sudden passing. I was privileged to become a friend going back to the Canton Jaycees days. I respected his devotion as a family man,a gentleman and business man. His community involvement cannot be overstated. I was fortunate to sit with him at the last HOF dinner honoring volunteers and former HOF chairmen, where we shared many memories. He will be missed.
I hope many happy memories will help you at this time. Godspeed Tom, RIP

Tom was always one of my "big cousins" as our generation spans 19 years. I remember the wedding, and wonderful these two were together. As we both moved away, it was hard to keep in touch. Having lost my husband in April of 2020, i do understand all the mixed thoughts and emotions. Sending much love and many prayers for strength and peace.

Tom was a wonderful gentleman and leader in our community. I served on the Developmental Disabilities board with Tom in the 80’s. He was a wealth of information and inspiration to all of us on the board. Tom will be missed by all who knew and associated with him. God Bless him and comfort his family.

Dear Angela, Thomas & Amanda:
On behalf of my wife Alice and me, we send you our deepest sympathy on the loss of Tom. I was proud to know him going way back to my days on Governor George Voinovich's cabinet and for all of his kind words and encouragement relative to his support of Canton and Stark County. I also have enjoyed my many years of friendship with him as we served on the HOF Board of Trustees together. I pray that God embraces your entire family during this very difficult time. When Habitat for Humanity of was starting in Canton 30 years ago, Tom offered free office space in downtown building and I was the Treasurer of Habitat and I remembering asking Tom to send us the utility bills for the office space and we would be happy to pay them. And Tom just told me ok I will. And then for the following years and years of being in his building we never got a utility bill ever. Not for power, water, heat, or taxes and not even rent. Never a bill from him. And he never wanted to be thanked for this great support for an organization just starting out in the community. God Bless you Tom. You make this community a better place and I, for one, will never forget your kindness to a group of folks who just wanted to end poverty housing in our community. God Bless your family.
